Now that the UN has authorized a no fly zone and we're going to help the Libyan rebels 2 weeks too late I'd like to lament the fact that our President had to borrow a pair of testicles from Hillary.

This entire affair is shameful and makes plain that Obama truly believes the US has no more a leadership role in the world than Denmark or Myanmar.

The god damn French, Brits and Italians all took a sensible stance from the outset and NATO could have gotten the job done weeks ago.

Our President played some golf and gave a weekly address about education reform.

What a fucking joke.

/and this isn't my usual run of the mill hating on Obama either...I feel embarrassed as an American right now.

I still think other countries should have chipped. Stop complaining for the U.S to do it.

You haven't been paying attention.
The Brits and the French wanted to do a no-fly zone over a week ago but the Obama administration wouldn't go along.

We didn't even ask for this UN resolution until today....the day that Gaddafi said "We're coming tonight" (for the remaining rebels).

Yeah, I'm not happy with how long it took. Especially with the Libyans (from what I've read) have been asking every journalist from USA when Obama was going to speak in favor of the rebels like he did re: Egypt.

Another article regarding the inaction of Obama causing frustrations for Hillary
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0311/51515.html

I'm not a fan, but the Clintons know a thing or two about diplomacy and global politics.
If Hillary Clinton is begging you to bomb someone, it's a safe bet. Even for left wing types.

Cross, I just dont get you. For domestic affairs, you seem to want the governement off your back, out of your wallet, and basically not all 'up in your business'.

Internationally...you seem to feel we should be running the world like we're the 'earth cops' or something. How come your libertarian views only apply to domestic issues? And doesnt the vast amount of money we spend policing the globe bother you?

I think we can agree on something here, Obama isn't a good president.

I'm on the side of freedom and democracy.
When did that become a partisan issue?

Stopping this little man from killing his people who only want freedom would have cost very little in treasure or global political capital.

It was a no-brainer.

Someone please argue otherwise, I'm all ears.

Well he acts quickly and people are on him, he takes his time and thinks for once, and people are on him. Really? Oh yeah, this is the USA, and we can't even get our political heads out of our asses.

No man...this situation was time sensitive.
The rebels have been all but crushed.
A week or two meant more than lives, it could be the difference between getting rid of a dictator or not.
Our friends were ready to go and we were still in the bathroom putting on makeup.

I understand everyone knows I strongly disagree with the policies of this President, but as I said in my original post, this isn't just hating on Obaba for hatins' sake.

Hell, I haven't posted in the politics forum for a very long time.

Is it cool or sad that we live in a nation that has to be the first to act to help out everyone. Granted I don't know much about why we had to give the nod, and they couldn't make actions without the nod.

I just wish we as a nation, stayed out of the affairs of other countries, and beat the living shit out of anyone who tries to get into ours. We can work together in other ways than hostility.

I don't know, I guess I see it as a responsibility for us to encourage freedom and democracy anywhere it's trying to take root.

We have the means, so our will should not come into question like this.

And I'm not talking about nation building follies like Afghanistan, I'm talking about exactly this sort of scenario.
All they need is some moral support, a no fly zone and knowing we have their back.
The Libyan rebels have already said they don't want or need boots on the ground.

That's why I'm floored by the weeks of silence.
Two weeks ago the rebels held the entire country save Tripoli and Gaddafi's home town.
Today he has them pushed them back to just one stronghold and was on the verge of wiping them out completely.

Maybe European countries should enforce the No-Fly zone? Does the U.S NEED to approve of it or help out?

No one was going to do it unilaterally, but that was never necessary.
We could have done it weeks ago with NATO, but we didn't feel like it. France and the UK were on board.
Hell, we never even sought a UN resolution until the damn arab league said it backed a no-fly zone.

That probably should be repeated: The Arab League...probably the most vile group of anti-Semitic, dictatorial scum in the UN asked for a no-fly zone before we did.

Here's another piece on the administration basically leaving Hillary out to dry while our allies were pressing her on the issue.

Well a no-fly zone does cost a lot, and it's hard to maintain. It doesn't seem worth it with all that's going on in the U.S.

But it happened, so this isn't very relevant.

A no-fly zone coordinated out of Italy and maintained by warships in the Mediterranean does not cost a lot to maintain and isn't difficult. You sit around and wait for something in the air...then you shoot it.
We can destroy radar, air defenses and command and control without ever launching a plane.

Worth it? Well you can put your own price on a free north Africa and civilians killed by their own government.
