Hmmm. Maybe I'm wrong. Did he stand up more earlier in his career at all?

The book on him has always been to get the puck up high because he goes down early, and has good legs to cover the bottom of the net. Mostly standard for of a butterfly goalie.

Where he's weaker is by sitting so far back, he's giving shooters something to look at, and not cutting off angles. One example of how that's a problem is rebounds. If I'm coming down the wing on Miller, he'll be out at the top of the paint challenging. I can see less net, have less of a window to shoot at because Miller is taking it away, and less time to make a decision because there's less ice available.

On Lundqvist, I have more to look at, more to shoot at. I have more time to take another stride closer in. I also can take a low shot to the opposite side of the net hoping for a fat rebound to squirt out that side, which is much harder to do on a goalie that's out to challenge.

I think he is having a harder time recovering... He always comes far out of the net to challenge the shooter, but this season he seems to be allowing more goals because he doesn't recover as well as he used to.

We've seen so many times this season to why Miller coming THAT far out isn't such a good idea.

Knee injury, right?

Well, that style of play requires an active defense to clean up the messes so to speak, and make sure people are tied up so they can't mosey on down the slot and pick up trash. When your defense does it's job, it's a great way to play. When they don't (which we can all agree that they haven't this year), the goaltender starts to over commit and/or cheat a little, which has been happening a lot.

It all flows together. Nothing stands on an island by itself.

I totally agree, but Miller comes out a bit too far. Last year he didn't do that too much, until we played Boston in the playoffs. Staying back in your crease prevents a dangle, but leaves an easy shot, and coming out far prevents a shot, but leaves an easy dangle/wrap around.

If Miller can stay in the middle he's fine.

I know what you're both thinking, but he's having trouble recovering because he's putting himself out of position on the first shot.

Watch a lot of the goals that he's been unable to recover one. He's had plenty of strength pushing back, but he was just too far out to fix it.

I think he needs to try to stay more center, yet square, and challenge a little more.

That's how I see it anyway.

True but he takes himself COMPLETELY out of the play, how long are they supposed to tie a guy up without taking a penalty or what are they supposed to do when everybody crashes and he's COMPLETELY out of the play. Look at the 2nd goal he gave up in the last Sabres/Bruins game, I have no idea what the hell he was thinking there. It's like he's worried about them scoring from behind the goal-line or impossible angles so much that he's totally giving up the entire net behind him.

how many goaltenders have put up lundqvist's number of starts and not hit 30 wins? i fail to be impressed by this in terms of talent. longevity yes, talent, no.

There are two ways to determine how good a goaltender is.

Performance when you watch him
His stats

He has both. Like it or not, he's a good goalie.

he is a good goalie, just never felt he was elite.

however, and i dont wanna take away the 30 wins stat, but with the elimination of the tie, it is easier to gain wins.

again, no big thing, just something to think about.

That was my thought. Perhaps later I'll track goalies that rack up similar start numbers and see if any of them fail to win that number of games.

Of course if you're getting that number of starts, you're proving yourself talented to begin with.

They ARE in 7th place, ahead of the Sabres. He's playing as good if not better than Miller, IMO.
