Im just curious... what are the "rules" on retiring a players number? Who should be in the rafters? How long after retirement would it take to place someone in the rafters?

Dom has to be up there at some point, doesn't he?

Rj also has to be up there at some point, right?

Ruff? maybe not as a player, but a coach and overall part of the organization?

Do non-players receive that honor often? I know the Knoxs' are up there, as they should be...

Just curious on this is all....

Tim Horton is up there as a memorial for dying while he was a Sabre. However, given that he was apparently drunk driving, I don't feel it should be up there.

Honestly, besides the French Connection, I don't see why any numbers should be retired.

Next up should be Hasek's 39 and then after that, no one until someone has a ridiculous career that includes at least one Cup.

horton was also driving 100 mph without a seatbelt. everytime i drive by where he died, i wonder why there isnt some sort of plaque or something.

hasek should be retired next year. and his banner should be with the angry goat head.

He spent time in both logos.

4 years in blue and gold vs 5 (and his best) years in red and black. I support the Goathead.

perrault and hasek are the only two that really should be up there. martin and robert probably wouldn't have made it without perrault. i'm okay with those three up there for that reason...they were mostly known as one unit.

hasek with the goat. that's when he was most dominant and had the best teams.

I don't mind either one, although I suppose he did make it to the finals with the goat-head. Be that as it may, I have a feeling this team would honor him with the classic logo, as we're trying to brand that identity back into Buffalo.

there really arent any rules for retiring numbers. i can get behind Hasek getting the goat head on his banner (the idea of his number getting retired is without question)

I think that a retired number should be a player who was either an immense talent, or an irreplaceable part of the organization. So I think The French Connection and Hasek should be the only numbers up there.

And thoughts on non players being up there? Knox x2, is obvious.... but you'd have to honor Rj in some way... what about Ruff when its all said and done? ... those would be the only 2 non players i could think would be worthy of an honor such as this....

What about Big Tom saving the team and handing it over to a die hard Buffalo fan keeping the team here for years to come?

I think retired names/numbers need to be unforgettable and irreplacable. RJ certainly fits that bill. As an owner, I think Tom Golisano is fairly forgettable as an owner outside of the situation the team was in at the time. Give him a plaque in the lobby, but no banner.

I think Ruff should only get one if he wins a cup.

Larry Quinn and Darcy should be up there someday. Don't you think? *kidding*

RJ for sure. I agree, Hasek with the Goathead.

I'm all about Danny Gare, but shouldn't Mike Ramsey be up there too then? As for Pat LaFontaine; well I don't even think the Islanders have his number retired or do they? And he put up better cumelative numbers there than he did in Buffalo.
