Just a fluff topic to argue needlessly over.

Gerbe's tying goal was necessary to get the big point, but I'm going to say Vanek's. Gerbe was pretty lucky to let that shot fly blind and hit the corner. As pretty as it was, he was real fortunate.

Vanek knew exactly what he wanted to do, and turned on some surprising after burners to split the D and bury the breakaway. Turning a on-on-two into a breakaway was quite impressive to me.

Nonsense! Gerbe said in his post game interview that he's been practicing that move. He did exactly what he wanted to.

But as much of a Gerbe fan as I am, Vanek's goal has my vote. That was pure fucking POWER! I felt like I could lift cars after watching Vanek blow by those two guys and shoulder the last one off before burying the puck.

The move to get around the defender with that little chip made the defender drop on his ass, then the goal was awesome. Vanek gets my vote.

Come on if you ever played the game you have to say Gerbe's, that was effing sick.

I went with Gerbe as it came right after Carcillo patted him on the head. Did you also notice how a couple Sabres throttled him against the boards and I believe this occurred after the pat? I think teams expect Vanek to get his looks, spots, and goals. But what does it do to a team's morale when you get absolutely owned by the smallest guy on the ice...and then this teammates throttle you for dissing him?

Both were stellar plays, and Vanek has always been my favorite Sabre since he got here, but if that wasn't the biggest F-U of the season.

Well, okay, wait a minute, scoring in OT after the other team conceded the OT and may be the team you're facing in a week was pretty big as well.

Tougher call than I thought.

I have to go with Gerbe. The psychosomatic effects of Carcillos taunting, followed by Gerbe's amazing NO LOOK SPIN O RAMA BACKHAND! And remember, we didnt need the win, technically we needed a tie, gerbe gave us that playoff position, vanek cemented it and protected it from Carolina. We pay vanek the big bucks to step up in that situation, find the speed he's been hiding all game, and make the game deciding play. Who on earth really expects this stuff from freaking Gerbe?

Gerbe's goal, with the lifted puck decoy and the spin-o-rama, was better as a standalone goal.

But Vanek's, what it meant and how he did it and how he reacted, made it that much more awesome.

Both were good but Gerbe's goal is the one that put us into the playoffs. As for skill they're about equal.

Because I'm a Vanek homer, to see him plow to the net past the defense reminded me of the goal against the Caps to get our first home win of the season. So I want to say his was better.

On the other hand, Gerbe's goal made me shit my pants.

I dunno, it is a toss up for me...

Is it me or does the guy just look more confident than ever? It like he looked down the bench and the lightbulb turned on that this is his team. The biggest difference...he owns the ice he skates on every night. You just see it when he skates.

Where's the hole in his game that people used to crucify him about in the past? The non-existent "laziness" that people seemed to always tag him with? IMO, it wasn't laziness, it was a bit of difficulty learning his game without the puck on his stick. Well that's gone now.

After hitting as many posts and being a bit snake-bitten, the Vanek of a few years ago may have went back to passing first and shooting second. Last night, it was one of those "chocolate meets peanut butter" nights. A perfect pass to Pominville and good positioning in OT, and cashing in on a favorable bounce of the puck. Sure he's had better statistically seasons, but 32 goals and 31 assists being the player teams look first to shut down, especially with no Derek Roy for them to contend with?

...and he's going into the playoffs on an upswing. Philly made a big mistake conceding that point. I'll take the Miller/Briere v. Vanek/Bobrovsky matchup every day of the week and twice on gameday.

I'll tell you one thing; I'm starting to move to the edge of my seat every time Vanek touches the puck. That hasn't happened to me with a player since Connolly could dangle in the 2006 playoffs.

Vanek is my guy on this team, and his goal was very impressive.
That being said, every once in a while a goal is scored that is truly worth much more than the tally on the board. After Vanek's goal, I gave a solid fist-pump, but after Gerbe's goal I quite literally rocketed off my couch and dove to the ground.

This reminded me a lot of Game 5 NYRvBUF 2007, there was an exciting winner in OT, but what people will always remember is the tying tally.

Regardless of where we go from here, this goal will be remembered.

Vanek's goal was 10/10

Gerbe's goal was 20/10.

Gotta give it to Gerbs...

Gerbe can practice that all day, but that's still a 50/50 shot at best. You guys know how unpredictable a backhand shot can be. (See Hecht, Strokin' Jochen)

Either way, both were awesome.

I still gotta vote for Vanek. From where I was sitting, it looked like he was shot out of a cannon at the far blue line. Those first couple strides were insane. It was like it said "Fuck this shootout noise. I'll win it RIGHT HTE FUCK NOW. BITCH!"

Both great goals. I voted Gerbe because as great as Vanek's play was just to get the oppurtunity, the goal itself was just a pull to the backhand on one of the worst goalies in a breakaway/shootout situation. Gerbe's goal was lucky but come on, fake dangle spin-o-rama backhand chedda bob far side, FOR THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!

GERBACITY

I said Vanek's. Gerbe's goal just looked lazy. He wasn't facing the net, couldn't be bothered to skate in any closer for a better shot, and couldn't put it in without banking it off the post. Just another lazy example of this lazy, lazy player who isn't worth his contract.
