I really, really need help.

I'm not exactly computer retarded, but this shit is going waaay above my head.

One day, I was using my wired internet connection when all of a sudden, it just shit out. I have a new Dell Studio 1458 with Windows 7 Home Premium. It has a Broadcom NetLink adapter, which is what is causing all my problems. If you need anymore stats, please let me know.

So, basically, any time I plug in an ethernet cable (I've tried more than one and at my apartment and my boyfriend's house), it tells me I have a public unidentified network, and thus, no connectivity. I can't rename this connection and I can't change it to a home connection. My wireless is working fine, but it sucks not being able to plug in (I prefer to). Dell wants to replace my entire mother board, but I'm not sure something so drastic needs to be done.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the card and drivers, system restore, disabling and re-enabling the card, and I tried a Microsoft PowerShell script that changes the network from a public to a home network; however, the switch works but there is still no internet connection.

I've run IP config, but I have no fucking idea what I'm looking at. :( Can anyone help me decipher to see if there are any standout problems? I'm super confused as to what I'm seeing and I don't really understand. I've spent a lot of time Googling this, only to go around in circles.

There's a MMC that you can use to change it from automatically labeling it an unidentified network, but that is not available for this version of Windows 7. It looks like it's only for the Pro version.

Anyway, here's IP config:

If anyone knows what I'm talking about, I greatly, greatly appreciate your help. Let me know if there's anything I need to clarify.

Oh, and here's what I'm talking about with not being able to change it to a home network. You can see there is no link where it says, "Public network", unlike the home network above.

Beth, did you get this figured out? When you ran IPConfig, was the ethernet cable plugged in? Is the wireless connection and the physical connection coming from the same router? (I'm trying to figure out why you'd get a 169.254 (APIPA) address on the physical connection).

Do other computers get internet access using those connections?

Have you tried going into your wireless networks and deleting the saved networks?

Try opening a command prompt and running 'netsh winsock reset'.

Jeremy,

Other computers are connecting just fine to the router, so I don't believe it's a router issue. The ethernet cable was plugged in when I ran ipconfig and both connections were coming from the same router.

Just tried that command line, gotta restart my computer.

lol, I'm actually surprised that fixed it. That's usually a last-ditch "welp, nothing else worked, fuck it" approach. Glad to be of service, payment can be arranged through escrow, which I'll let Jay take care of ;)

Pass...that could make things awkward, we share not only an apartment, but a wall...

It kinda shit out again, but repairing the connection made it work again. Hmm, hope this isn't a recurring issue.
