We're a good defensive defensemen and a superstar forward from a cup contender, me thinks.
Those would help, but what do we change to actually get these guys to show up in the playoffs? It's great if they perform well in the regular season, but if it's always going to be 1st round eliminations then it seems a change of psyche is needed. How that's done I havent a clue, but I dont really feel like these guys have that 'killer instinct' to win a playoff series. I guess the only cure for that is time and experience.
fuckit, heres to next year!
How does taking a better and deeper team to seven games with half an AHL defense and outhitting a team known for being physical constitute not showing up. Think Grier was crying in his stall because he didn't show up? Give me a break.
Sorry, let me clarify a bit. I should have stressed the killer instinct bit and not even said the words 'show up', because that does come off as 'not trying', but that is not what I mean.
I mean the ability to keep going when you've got a lead, to keep pushing and driving and scoring and NOT get in the bullshit defensive posture which basically ensures the other team will tie it up and win given enough time.
I also mean the ability to get their heads around the fact that they are in the playoffs, and that if they can cultivate the mindset they had for the last half of the season they'd ease up a bit and not play so tense. this team we saw against philly only looked like the sabres we love about half the time, if that. I'd say a key to success in the playoffs in the future would be mental maturity, being able to tap into their calmness and composure while playing instead of psyching themselves out, which, IMO, they did this year. Montador anyone?
Notice how last year Ennis was the only one who really lit it up, and this year it was Gragnani? How come only the kid who was JUST pulled up is able to let it all hang out and actually looks like a hockey player? Is it possible he's not been subjected to some sort of collective losing mentality psyche? Who the hell knows, but there must be some reason for it.
