I'm not saying we shouldn't. I'm just saying if our need is a goal scorer he's not the answer.

Wouldn't a playmaker be the one helping set up our goal scorers then so we take care of two birds with one stone?

To me, if we get a great playmaker. That leaves more space for everyone on the ice. A great passer to get our scorers a puck on their sticks. Seems to me we actually need a great playmaker for vanek, stafford, pominville and the others.

Yeah, a top level playmaker should, in theory, make our goalscorers like Vanek and Stafford that much better.

In theory yes an elite playmaker like Richards should be able to get our goal scorers to score. But the original post I replied too stated that Richards was a goal scorer, which he is not. If B&Y thinks we need a goal scorer, not someone to help set up goals but an actual goal scorer, Richards isn't the solutuion.

28 goals. He can totally score us some goals.

And in the process, he can set up our guys.

He can do both.

I'd rather have the guy that can create goals for other players. But I don't think B. Richards would come here considering a ton of teams in the league are going to be offering for his services. And he won't be cheap due to his market value and high demand

If the Sabres trade for his rights, they can get it done. But his rights are gonna be expensive.

I've never understood this "trading for rights" thing. You make a trade to get them on your team before they technically become a UFA, right? But they aren't required to sign, are they? I don't understand just how that helps a team. Is there some kind of indication ahead of time that the player in question would sign before the trade is ever made?

it's so they have extra time to negotiate. no, the player doesn't have to sign. it's just like trading a player under contract...only there's no games between the end of the cup finals and july 1st.

Would be a great way to screw over a team though.

Negotiate with the player, send him for more players but he resigns anyway with you.

I'm not down with the whole trade for rights thing, I've seen a couple of teams do that and not get it done. Just go after him hard, get a presentation together and rock his socks off. If he says no you move on quickly, don't sit idly by while other players slip away.

I would imagine that Philly would demand for either Myers or Miller in exchange for Richards. I mean like... if we played our cards like it could potentially be a blockbuster deal, but I dont see the sabres giving up either guy.

They're talking about Brad Richards here, not Mike Richards.

I am now reeling from the idea of the Sabres trading for Mike Richards. Jesus that'd be awful.

I'm with you, but teams do it and they even give up A LOT just to talk to the the guy for a few days before everybody else. It shows that you want the player more than the other teams do, and it allows them to sell you on the team without all of the other GMs yammering at the same time.

I feel like you can say all you need to say on the day UFA begins. Do it with a big presentation, maybe an exclusive video production that you watch with the player and his agent or something like that. Try to meet the man in person shake his hand and say what you have to say without weakening your team with a needless trade before hand.

There's really no reason to trade for the rights of ANY player named Richards.

I just feel like his salary is going to cripple whatever team he ends up with. It seems, based on the buzz that's around him, that he's going to get top tier (crosby) level money and while talented, he is not that type of player. But maybe some of that buzz is just due to the weak UFA crop around him, and he won't get paid as highly as I think he will.

I think some team will probably go balls out for him.

I don't really want to be that team, for the wrong the price.
