No REIs close to us here. 3 opening in NYC this year, but the next closest is Pittsburgh. My boss grew up in SoCal, he's really complimentary of REI. Still orders some stuff off their website apparently.

I'm stuck with EMS around here, although I do get stuff from Gander Mountain as well. Both are just a little pricey IMO.

Do you guys have an REI near by? They started in Seattle then branched out but they may still be mostly west coast. REI.com though is their online front and they make some pretty good gear that sits between Coleman and the high end stuff. For a beginner who wants to get something better than the bottom shelf shit but doesn't want to commit to the top shelf gear I'd say they are a good place to look. They also make a wide range of products that range from a bargain to a mint.

yeah, REI is okay, not my favorite, but it has decent prices and decent gear.

ems = expensive mountain sports. you can rent stuff from them at decent prices, though. gander mountain and dicks for real camping gear is like going to aldi for produce. decent for some people, others get stomach viruses.

The only thing that makes EMS tolerable is my 15% college student discount they give me, even though my ID is from my community college I graduated from years ago.

I'm fortunate that for most things, the people I go camping with often have stuff already, so I can use theirs and be ok.

I don't have one company I choose for all my gear. I like Osprey packs, Marmot clothes, Merrell shoes, and MSR tents. For a lot of my gear I try to stay on the less expensive side except when it comes to backcountry gear. Light and sturdy is a hard combination to find and you end up paying a lot for it but for car camping with the family I'm not above the standard Coleman 2 person tent if my son and I want to catch a night out in July.

I'm not overly worried about getting really good gear. I only go out a couple times a year, and it's always car camping, so that's not that complicated.

I'd like to start going on some weekend backpacking trips though, and when I do that, I'll spring for good stuff.

im close to the one in pittsburgh, but even for me it is a bitch to get to, not to mention how shitty south side is to park in

north face.

they used to be the best, then vogue bought them a while ago and they just turned into shit. i only have one piece of gear from them, and that's a backpack from pre-suck. they have recently started getting better, but they definitely milk their name. still more of a fashion statement than real gear.

the best bang for a buck in the gear world that i know of is Alps Mountaineering.

I have a really nice backpack and a fleece. I don't really buy the gear for camping or anything, but the fleece is great for the awful winds on UB North Campus. Anyone can tell you that the wind on North Campus is fucking terrible and it's even worse when you're parked 15 minutes away from class. I got my North Face fleece for $50. Cannot beat that.

The only thing I hate about my fleece is that my hair sheds all over it and it just sticks on it. It pisses my boyfriend off when his gets covered in my hair, too. The joys of having long hair.
