The bottom line is: if he plays as good as he did this season, stays healthy, and actually holds true to that 40+ goal pace. NOBODY will think he's overpaid.

Goals = popular opinion
40-49 = a steal, Darcy is a mastermind
30-39 = worth the money, fair deal indeed (the camp I'm in)
20-29 = overpaid, he should have got only a 2 year deal or a million less per season.
0-19 = what. the. fuck. we should trade him 5 games ago for a 5th rounder.

Keep in mind that Vanek has put up some humble 20-29 goal seasons while collecting considerably more per year. And Stafford is a growing asset without the puck (as is Vanek), and a burgeoning leader on the team.

Personally I don't like Stafford I was hoping he'd be gone before the start of summer. The guys waaaaay to streaky to be making $4 Mill a year. I know there are other guys in the league that make more and do less but we're not talking about the rest of the league we're talking about the Buffalo Sabres. he won't 30 goals next year.

Man with this signing I hope Darcy can do something with Hecht and Morrison either trade them or just demote them to Portland or Rochester when time comes. At least it won't count against cap.

Little less than a month away from free agency boys, hopefully it's a good one.

Plays like the one he made to muscle around a defense man 1 on 1 and beat the goalie to win the game in OT, like him or not those kind of feats make a man a leader. It makes people look up to you. So if he keeps chipping in some occasional heroics and keeps becoming more and more responsible for the system, his teammates are goign to look up to him and all he has to do is embrace the role.

In short, a couple more years at around last years results and he will be just that: a leader.

Most of my criticism of this deal is just criticism of most all contracts that have been signed in the past 3-4 years. We are six years away from a labor stoppage that happened because owners claimed that they were losing too much money because of large player salaries. Now here we are again, arguably in worse shape than before the lockout.

Many of you are saying if Stafford scores 30 goals, that $4 million is a "fair" price. I disagree, but I think most GMs in the league probably would pay $4 mil for a 30-goal-scorer. I think that's absurd (especially when that player only records 21 assists or whatever).

I also think Stafford will not score 30 goals a year, and that this season was a "contract year bump". I hate to say it, but this seems like another signing in the vein of Hecht, Gaustad, Connolly, and Pominville.

Naw if they do win they will do it because of career years by both Gerbe and Ennis. Obviously Miller and many others of cours.
