Move on, don't bring back old players who won't help you anymore.

Yes, that was a really nice moment.

Well, Dave Andreychuk did a nice job for us for that one year. Than he went to Tampa Bay and wins a goddamn Cup.

33 points in 74 games when he came back to Buffalo.

If anything, that's all Drury could give us. Is there really a reason to waste our time on him? I don't want him back, he's a shell of his former self. He is not the same player when he was with Buffalo.

I want a player who can play on the top two lines and put up 60+ points, not a guy who will barely be able to play 30 games if lucky now.

what? see him work his ass off and provide leadership for lucky team? we will. the issue is what does he want salary wise? hes on the backend of his career, and his best days are behind him. hes worth, to me.. maybe 3.5 mil a year.

3.5 is patently retarded.

He needs to sit out this upcoming season and rehab his beat-to-shit body, then see what he can do in 12/13

If he was worth 3.5 mil, NYR wouldn't be buying out is contract at that exact cost to their franchise.

Maybe half of 3.5 million because he is nowhere near worth that kind of cash now.

i completely believe drurys intangibles and worth ethic and leadership are worth two right there. the fact that he is still a 35-45 point scorer when healthy means 3.5 to me. but thats just me. i dont believe drury is finished as a productive player. new york just really mishandled him, IMO.

Maybe he just mailed it in after cashing in big, but his health and age won't allow him to simply turn it on again. He'll be lucky to hit 40 pts again before he retires.

3.5 for a guy like him, yea right, At best you sign him for 1 million and give him bonuses.

Extra million if he plays in 75+ games and an extra million if he gets 40 points.

As Phil said, he needs to rehab his knee, Are we really bitching about leadership still? These guys have been in our system for 5 or more years no. And to me, when Rivet was sitting out, Roy was gone, that leadership came from Vanek's game more than anything.

Yes but I don't think the duration of one's play within an organization automatically gives them leadership powers.

I certainly don't think Kalinin was our guy. 0_0

I never said it does, but if you watched Vanek, you'd see how he puts the team on his shoulders when he needs to, this doesn't mean he's going to score that tying goal or game winner all the time or even be on the ice for it, you can see it in his play. It happened all last year.

I know you'll never agree with me because you're the most critical of Vanek.

Not saying that really. I'll just say any player on this roster doesn't have the leadership qualities of captains on other teams.

We don't really have a "leader", just support players and scorers.

To add to the idea of not getting him back: What kind of message would that send to our core that are becoming leaders(Roy, Vanek, Pommers, Gosse)? "Look, we don't think you have enough leadership to lead our team, so yeah, we're bringing the old captain back." :/

What if we got a goal scorer? That would send a message to them saying "you suck at goal scoring". They're grown ups, they can remove their tampons for a signing.

Fair point. But IMO, it's totally different. What I'm saying is adding a goal scorer or top defenseman would mean "we're gonna help you by adding good players, giving you the tools to compete, etc". Of course, we might need the kind of player Drury is. But Drury, for the sabres represents something. He was known for being a good leader, good 2-way forward, etc. but he also represents another era of the Sabres franchise, bringing him back would be a step back, IMO. We have seemingly moved on and now we rely on guys that grew with the team and there is confidence put in them. Of course, Drury could help the team, in a different role than before, but I think it would just be too awkward having him coming back after how he left...
