Excellent point raised from a buddy of mine.

How are the players getting out?

I think I heard somewhere that the Bruin players planned on staying at a nearby hotel but they ditched that idea and headed out so I assume and hope they made it out as with the Canuck players.

I dunno about you guys, but there's a curious amount of cheering and happiness on display for a town that just lost the Stanley Cup.

Glad Timmy Thomas won the cup. It was the ONLY reason I was rooting for the Bruins. I just could not root for the Canucks. I just didn't like them.

It was the only time in my life I can recall ever rooting for a Boston team. I do not "hate" any of the Bruins players. Even Chara I'm neutral about.

Fuck Vancouver. If riots happen just because of a hockey game and a person dies, the city probably isn't too nice.

From what i've heard it's just some nuts and most of the local people in Vancouver are very sad to see this happen.

I've seen some unspeakable things happen from douchebags in Buffalo, but I would not denounce the city as a whole.

This actually ties into the anarchist thread I started in the politics forum. Many of these idiots were not even hockey fans or near the arena because they cared about the game. They pre-planned this crap days before. They just wanted to take adavantage of the setting, win or lose, in order to burn, break, and steal stuff.

This shouldn't be any more of a black eye on Vancouver than it is for other Canadian cities that have rioted after hockey games. L.A. and Boston have had riots in recent years as well, but I think Canadian police are not very prepared for these types of incidents. Vancouver PD knew damn well that there was a potential for this mess regardless of how the game ended. It's a failure on two points...

First, it's a failure to have an effective criminal intelligence unit that could monitor the potential for violence. Odds are high that there was some planning and therefore warning online for VPD to take notice of. These idiots, like some anarchists for example, coordinate online. If VPD had a criminal intelligence unit that was paying attention, they should have known what the threat level was.

Second, whether they were prepared or not, they had nowhere near enough officers on hand to deal with the crowd. It only takes a small group of true idiots to get things started, and then the middlers escalate by watching, encouraging, yelling at police, and taking photos and video of the mess. I know VPD had officers visible during the series, interacting and being friendly with fans. That's great, but they also need to have enough of a police presence to deter or to react quickly to the early stages of a disturbance before it reaches the level of a riot. Based on this incident and riots before, it appears to me that Canadian police either don't have the mindset (afraid of being cast as storm troopers), the knowledge base from intel gathering, or training to deal with large disturbances or riot scenarios.

It's really inexcusable to have such a predictable event take place with such ineffective police response.

How do you know they planned this?

Experience and prior knowledge. SOME planned this, the rest just take advantage and join in because of the crowd mentality, thinking they can blend in and fade out without repercussion.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=369127

Notice the quote from the police chief that there were, "...criminals, anarchists, and thugs".

Anarchists are actually fairly predictable...kind of ironic huh?

Well, if that's true, which we don't know for sure, then it shows the side of MANY people in that city.

"Oh. People burning cars and stealing shit. I should join in!"

I'm about to raise some eyebrows I think, but...

Seattle and Vancouver seem to have a higher percentage of the anarchist type. Seattle hasn't totally recovered from the embarrasment of the WTO riots in 1999. Anarchists, or groups that veiled themselves by other names, were at the heart of that mess. The area is supportive of the anti-authoritarian mindset, and Vancouver is very similar. It's absolutely NO surprise that anarchists were involved with last nights riot. It's more surprising that VPD wasn't better prepared for the event, regardless of whether anarchists were involved.
