I'm not complaining about Kaotalik's contract, unless he actually is on the roster all year (which I doubt). I'm trying (in vain) to explain what a benefit it is for Calgary to get rid of Kotalik's cap hit.

All Calgary had to do was send Kotz to the AHL......no need to trade him. Calgary fans are saying that this "dump" is a smoke screen and trading him wasn't a "need".

But how many teams can or will send a player to the minors and eat a big contract? Not many owners will do that. It's easier said than done when it's not your 3 million dollars.

Is it fair to say that Regehr is among the best defensemen in the NHL?

If so, then it's a steal. If not, it's a good trade.

Exact definition aside, I like the deal.

It certainly looks like a major + on the ice for Buffalo, and a major plus on the balance sheet for Calgary to me. I'm excited to have Regehr on the team, but let's not count our chickens before they hatch and call this the best trade in years when not a bit of the result is known. I was pumped to see Rivet come, and that didn't pan out. I don't think this will be similar, but who knows?

Kots would be a salary dump from CGY. Kotz either gets traded again or pushed to ROC (<--- so cool to say that again), or at worst bought out.

He better be pushed to Rochester

Maybe he'll see the situation and instead of going to the minors head to the KHL or some other league on another continent.

For a stretch of about 2-3 weeks per season he was hear, he looked awesome....then just as quickly, that guy would vanish and we'd see the normal Kotalik who wouldn't use his size, dig out pucks, etc...

I know, but they have been screaming for the GM up there to eat that contract for awhile now. They are pissed because it was between eating the contract or this and they aren't very happy about losing their best defensemen.

You guys understand that Kotalik scored 81 points in 4 years on the Sabres powerplay right? What do we always bitch about...our lack of effectiveness on the powerplay. This move makes way more sense than anyone is giving Regier credit for. It's a great trade, addressed 2 needs. A strong physical stay at home defensive partner for Myers, and help from the point on the powerplay. Kotalik will allow Pommers to move down onto a wing on the PP, gives us more size (say what you want, Kotalik is a big body, and is pretty strong along the boards) and all we gave up was a midget prospect, and the guy who cost us the Philly series, oh yeah, and we got a 2nd round pick, so Darcy can make 2 moves next year at the deadline

That can't happen. That makes too much sense!

So what's more likely? That we buy Kotalik out, or give him a chance at camp then either bury his ass or keep him up?

He also said specifically they're not buying out Kotalik...and said he was an NHL player and was valuable at that level (that was the impression I got anyway)

Darcy isn't going to come right out and insult or embarass Kotalik by telling everyone the plan is to bury him in Rochester.

Jvacc - I remember his booming shot on the PP, but 3 mil is way too much for a one dimensional player. With Grier and Nieds both likely gone, maybe they plan on giving him a fair chance on the 3rd line also. I'd much rather they bury him, and then address the PP with an actual, bona-fide top d-man that can run the point. Now THAT would make sense.

When I thought the Sabres were getting Regher and Kots for Butler, Byron and a 2nd, I thought it was a good trade for us. Now that I see that Buffalo got the 2nd, I believe it's borderline theft! Great trade. And I don't mind having Kotalik try for a job and then get dumped in the A when he doesn't make it. Not a bad injury call up to have, huh? Though, if he did get called up from the A for injury replacement, how would that affect the cap? Pro-rated for how much he plays, or does our cap hit instantly go up by 3 mil?
