It would be pro-rated - bad if he's replacing a lower contract, good if he's replacing a higher contract.

When I thought the Sabres were getting Regher and Kots for Butler, Byron and a 2nd, I thought it was a good trade for us. Now that I see that Buffalo got the 2nd, I believe it's borderline theft! Great trade. And I don't mind having Kotalik try for a job and then get dumped in the A when he doesn't make it. Not a bad injury call up to have, huh? Though, if he did get called up from the A for injury replacement, how would that affect the cap? Pro-rated for how much he plays, or does our cap hit instantly go up by 3 mil?

To me this is the best trade Darcy has made in years. I don't even care about Kotalik coming back. Regher who is Myers idle probably will be a pair as number 1 and 2 defenseman and then you throw in a second round pick in next years draft to me it was a steal. I wasn't too impressed with Butler at all and with all of defenseman coming in the next few years this made alot of sense for Buffalo.

Heck, I'd love to see another move for a top 2 pairing D man! I'd like to see a two way D man on the second pair that can wire sweet outlet passes like Soupy did for us.

Some of the Flames fans actually like this trade.

Quote:
I actaully like this trade. This trade free's up cap space and make the team younger. I dont know about you guys but regehr was not the main cog in our D core. This trade gives us a center who will be ready to jump to the nhl maybe next season or the season after and with 53 points in 67 games he is by far not a bad prospect. The only problem is that we gave up a pick, The pick is the only thing i didnt like but i can accept it. We rid kotaliks 3.5 cap and regehrs services for a top 4 d man and a good prospect which isnt that bad

Quote:
Butler is 24 years old, skates very well, has a good first pass and is defensively sound. He sounds like a less physical version of Giordano.

Byron is 22 and goes balls out all the time and plays with no fear, is good in both ends of the rink. The only knock on him is size

When you realize Regehr was our #3 defenseman making 4 million, the return of those 2 players is not that bad. As stated by Feaster the 2nd was included to make Buffalo take Kotalik, essentially they bought the pick for $3,000,000

Quote:
I think you are overrating Regehr. He's not the guy he once was. Butler and Byron for Regehr is decent value because we aren't trading away the Regehr Flames fans fell in love with. We are trading away the Regehr that is too slow, takes alot of holding penalties and is our #3 defenseman. If any other team traded away a $4 million #3 defenseman for a younger more mobile defenseman with top 4 potential and a skilled center with top 6 potential we would be saying its a decent deal

You know I saw that and immediately thought of JM Liles... kinda thought he would be a nice addition... and I hear he tight with Miller... then I did a lil digging, freaking leafs... I would have given a 2nd for Liles.... then again, who knows what will happen with the cap.... oh well, still lots of options... and Im liking an un-cuffed darcy....

Losing a 3 million dollar contract which could have been lost in other ways does not make up for losing a top notch defense-men. I guess if your a Calgary fan you can say it does to make you feel better but it hardly cushions it. butler is a 5-6 D-man on any team if that and Byron MOST LIKELY wont get higher than the 3rd line. Add to th fact that we got a second rounder as well, its a steal. Id I were Calgary I wouldnt trade Regs and Kotalik for all of Byron and Butler as that.

The fact that Flames fans think Byron has top six potential kills me. And Butler in the top 4 is questionable at best.

Also, fun fact. At the time he was drafted, Myers' favorite player was Regehr.

Connolly's contract is up, and it sounds like we may resign him. For the right price, I can deal with it.

I really hope Kotalik never sees the light of day wearing a Sabres sweater during games.

So lazy.

Byron's a solid player and from what I saw, he always made smart decisions with the puck. Maybe in a few years, he could be a top 6.

Kotalik will be lucky if he's in a sabres uniform this year. Regehr and the 2nd rounder were the trade. Kotalik was just the dead-weight. Wow Darcy finally makes a great move and your complaining about the money Kotalik is eating up. Wow

I'm not complaining about Kaotalik's contract, unless he actually is on the roster all year (which I doubt). I'm trying (in vain) to explain what a benefit it is for Calgary to get rid of Kotalik's cap hit.

Also, I've been bitching about Bulter for a long time now. He showed some improvement at the end of the season, but I'm still hapy he got sent rather than Weber or anyone else beside Sekera. I never had much hope for Byron either.

Sure, yeah. It benefited Calgary a little bit in giving them space to sign more players.

But what the fuck do we care? We only see them once, sometimes twice a season.

Seriously, I don't understand what your deal is with that.

In the end, Calgary trade a solid shut-down d-man and a cash bounty for mistake-prone Butler, and they gave us a second rounder for a guy that we got with a 6th. I don't know how Byron's value grew to be that high, but damn.

If Connolly agrees closer to the league minimum and does not mind playing on the 3rd of 4th with some stints in Rochester, I would have no problem resigning him. I expect him to score more than 20 goals and assist for 50 of them, something he has never done.

Connolly underachieved big time this past season and has been injury prone in the past. The Sabres want healthy overachievers.

To Sabres:
D Robyn Regehr
RW Ales Kotalik
2012 second round pick

Robyn Regehr has been a defenseman the Sabres have coveted for years. Tyler Myers thinks highly of him. Regehr may play alongside Myers in the top defensive pairing.

Ales Kotalik is back for a second stint with the Sabres. He can score goals, but is very inconsistent. Failing to step up his production initiated his trade to the Oilers two years ago. It remained a problem in his time with the Rangers and Flames. Kotalik needs to regain his 2009 form and quickly get to work.

The 2012 second round pick is a good draft tool. It is in play if the Sabres need to trade for a top center (i.e. Stars' Brad Richards).

To Flames:
D Chris Butler
C Paul Byron

Chris Butler was outplayed by Andrej Sekera and Mike Weber. He became the odd man out. The three headed defenseman monster is no more.

Paul Byron will develop to be a good player. Unfortunately, the Sabres do not need to maintain its excessive stock of undersized centers.

Somwhere way back in this thread it was said that Calgary got robbed. I said I thought it was a fair deal for them, and the debate ensued because some thought I didn't like the deal or Regehr. I like the deal, even more if Kotalik goes to Rochester. OTOH, Calgary was in a bad cap spot, and likely wasn't going to "win" any deal they agreed to. However, it was widely reported that Buffalo's offer was definitely the best, I think for taking Kotalik's contract. Someone else put it well that Buffalo won the deal on the ice, and Calgary won off the ice. Once Calgary puts 3 mil toward a productive player or two it will be close to fair for them on the ice. I think some people saw how good it looked for Buffalo and just jumped to a conclusion that Calgary was robbed, without taking full look at it from their perspective.

I like to clarify a point and debate, to a fault sometimes. It doesn't mean I get angry about it or have a "deal" with anything.

If we resign Connolly, he better not see Rochester at all. He's still good enough to be in the NHL, and with what center depth do we send Connolly to the Amerks?
