The only thing with Dumont and Kotalik was, we picked the younger player with roughly the same output at the time.

Yeah alright Crim. Kots was the better pick.

EDIT: I'm not even going to discuss this at this point. If you honestly think that Kots was close enough to the player that Dumont was, and that we couldn't have shed cap elsewhere to keep JP around, this isn't even worth my time.

Kots was a joke. He was a huge joke. JP knew how to play the game.

Coincidentally (or is it?!?!), JP still plays in the NHL, and Kots doesn't.

Last I knew about Kotalik was he got injured pretty badly and hasn't played at all this year. I dunno about now if hes in the AHL or not.

I think it's pretty clear that management erred in letting Dumont walk while keeping Kotalik, I was just pointing out that a direct comparison between the two is flawed because it's not simply this guy or this guy, it's this guy at this cost or that guy at that cost. Bit of a difference.

Edmonton was smart and didn't resign him. Hell, even Glen Sather knew to move his ass off the Rangers. Who knows why it took Calgary so long to get rid of him, but he was waived about a month ago.

The cost was irrelevant. 2 million more for a competitor and a guy who can score goals from all over the ice, or 2 million for a lofty, floaty, lazy forward who doesn't back check.

If I'm a GM, I want COMPETITORS on my team. Kotalik has never been a competitor.

That's why I believe it IS that cut and dry.

I never said that Kotalik was good, that management should have kept him, or even that he was close to JP Dumont.

ALL I said was that cost was a factor in assessing value and that it wasn't just a this apple or that apple decision.

Then when you used points and points alone as a means for comparing the players I ripped you apart because it's a ridiculously simplistic way of looking at things and can be manipulated very easily.

Furthermore, the fact that you included Dumont's playoff stats and not Kotalik's made it look like you were trying to manipulate data to support your argument (even though you weren't because Kotalik's playoff stats are AWFUL). I picked on your post because it was overly simplistic, a terrible way to support your argument (which I do agree with and said so) and all in all just a lazy post.

Hell yeah it was a lazy post. I didn't get Kotalik's playoff stats because I had already closed the window when I decided to do it.

But the difference between Kotalik and Dumont is so vast, that it doesn't make a difference.

You didn't say any of those things directly, but you were playing devil's advocate by asking the questions.

"Twice as good?" Hell yeah twice as good. Hell fucking yeah.

Oh, that's right, forgot he was waived.

Yup. My bad.

Just really bitter about that decision.

So, I think we can say pretty easily at this point that much of Darcy's behavior that drove us nuts was actually filtered down from ownership. This offseason is like night and day compared to those in past seasons.

I like the argument about Kotalik in this thread.

JP Dumont officially does not have an NHL job now, by the way. Just got bought out.
