I think the contract is fair given his age...it's the right amount of money you would pay a player when they are pushing 40. I doubt the league will have a problem with it.

OldTimeHockey,

Why? It's totally within the CBA. Bonuses do count againt the cap, but as Phil listed, the bonuses are included in the total compensation already, and the deal still comes out to 40 mil total and a 4 mil per cap hit.

This is so farking awesome, and leaves all the room needed to sign Richards. They just have to make a big sales pitch about the intagibles of the organization because the $$$ will be there.

Why are people choosing between Gragnani and Sekera? All Darcy has to do is trade Morrisonn away for a draft pick to any team that needs to meet the cap floor. Sekera's new contract will be less than Morrisonn's 2.075 mil anyway, so we get rid of the worst of the three d-men and also ditch the highest cap hit...win-win.

morrissonn's value as a seventh is better than sekera's. sekara has value. trade him and a wing and or pick to free cap space or add a center. a lopsided deal to clear some cap and bring a center in is awesome at this point...especially with a decent core retained for a while.

Has Darcy or anyone else said what they plan on doing with Kotalik? Is he staying up here with us or is he going to Rochester? I honestly haven't paid much attention to his career since he was traded.

he won't be in rochester. darcy said something about he's competing for a position.

he's better than we give him credit for, he's just lazy and aggravating.

Sekera started to turn a corner last season, and Morrisonn really busted out down the stretch. I disagree with who's more valuable, but in the long run, with the legit players we now have, choosing between the two is a rather small issue. Nice for something like that to not be so crucial anymore.

Because the league doesn't like these contracts. Remember the Kovalchuk deal last year? Didn't the league make them redo it a bit?

With Ehrhoff's contract being as front loaded as it is...I don't think we'll have that much money.

WGR is talking right now about the possible league review of the contract being that the first 2 years of the contract pays Christian about $15 of those $40M.

The front loaded money doesn't matter, the cap hit is averaged out over the life of the contract...so 4 mil per, that's it.

That's actually a legit concern. The structure of the deal is clearly designed to circumvent the spirit of the salary cap. It's almost as bad as the nixed Kovalchuk deal.

My personal belief is that if Pominville isn't ready for the season, Kotalik plays until he comes back.

I don't think his 2-3 really good weeks a season cuts it on this team. Gerbe will beat him up.

I still think Kotalik will be traded or sent to Rochester. It's just that Darcy would never embarrass a player by coming out and saying so.

Yeah, I wonder what Pominville's progress is at this point. When the Sabres posted the pictures of him and Gerbe going over the locker room plans, it looked like he was using a knee walking scooter.

Rather see Kassian or see a call up. Just can't watch Ales turtle against the boards...

The issue with the Kovalchuk deal was that the term ran on long after anybody with sane mind would expect him to be playing or anything near effective. The league came in and made some limit about 42 or 44 years, and anything after that counts against the cap by actual salary. With a ten year term going to the age of 39, it's not even close to the Kovalchuk issue.

Well holy hell...so *this* is what it looks like when an owner wants to win and puts his money where his mouth is (instead of into golf courses or Florida mansions)

Sometimes, just sometimes, the good guys get a break.

Does Mancari loose his number? Imagine that...not getting your number back to a career AHLer.

Mancaris not being re-signed anyway, so it's a moot point. Ehrhoff I assume will keep his #5, which is available. I liked Lydman, but #5 will always be Mike Ramsey to me.

Now every summer when we spout off about our trade and FA ideas, we can actually believe that they have a chance to happen, instead of knowing it's only fantasy talk.
