Its also most likely front loaded where he gets like $5-5.5 mil per over the first 5 years and then the yearly amount tapers down. This way it lessens the cap hit for us and allows us to be in a decent position to buy it out towards the end, if need be.

There better not be a raise or even a small paycut if Connolly gets signed, he better get peanuts. I like the signing, but $4 million makes me ask why Stafford, Gaustad, Hecht, etc. ever got paid so much to begin with. The image of Buffalo as a potential playing destination must be turned on its head if they can sign one of the biggest names in the free agent market for UNDER his asking price.

It's all about the term. Players are willing to take less per season if they have the security of a long term deal. Guaranteed contracts in the NHL make players very willing to sign long term for a little less. I don't like them in general, but this could be an example of how it works for the team as well.

As for Connolly, I'm totally positive that neither the team or Connolly expects to re-sign there for anything over 3.5 mil. If he stays I hope it's for around 2.5-2.8 mil in a 3rd line role.

This has every possibility of being the beginning of a great era to be a Sabres fan.

The only thing that makes sense is that Pegula's rep and attitude has made Buffalo a team players want to be on. I think we overpaid people because that was the only thing that could get them to play here.
