The only bad contract is Kotalik, and we know that was just a favor to make the Regehr trade happen. The only way that hurts the team is if he actually gets put on the full roster.

Is there really a happy medium? If we didn't do any signings or trading, we would have complained. Now we're saying too much was done?

We addressed our needs that we couldn't have fulfilled from within our system.

I'm not saying we did too much. I'm just worried about Pegula being too involved as an owner and not just letting his hockey people handle things. I feel like Pegula is more or less whispering in Darcy's ear "well, what about this guy. I think he's a good player." Darcy is a company man, so he's probably just doing what Terry wants.

Like I said, I love this offseason, but at the same time, I don't want this to end up like the Tampa Bay fiasco or something like the New York Rangers.

Listen to the way Darcy and Lindy talked about Leino. They've been scouting for a while now, especially in the playoffs. How the hell would Terry know that Leino could play center?

If Terry was a meddlesome owner, they would have gone to Mississauga and pitched to "King Richards". If anything, he said to Darcy, "I want this team to be a contender. Here's my checkbook. Make it rain."

I'm sure Pegula has input, but I don't see him as the Jerry Jones-type...

I suppose. I just don't want to see us throwing money around just because we can.

Leino's cap hit is only 4.5 million.

If you're concerned about getting into a Chicago-like situation, don't worry: Kotalik, ShaMo, Hecht and Boyes are all off the books next year to the tune of 13 million dollars in cap space. We're fine :D

I'd comment on how I don't think we should refer to Leino's cap hit as "only 4.5 million."

However, seeing as the Leafs just signed Connolly to a ridiculous $4.75 million cap hit, I'd say we got the better deal. :D

Exactly. Leino got market value, which was an overpayment by about 1 million. But, we could afford to do it without fucking up our roster, so it was a good deal for us.

At some point, this honeymoon period has to stop.

I don't mean to rain on the parade, and don't get me wrong. I've loved every second of this off-season.

However, I really hope this doesn't end up like the Tampa Bay situation where we get a new awesome ownership, and then all of a sudden we try to solve our problems with bad UFA signings.

I'm not saying our signings were bad. I think I just want Terry to step back... maybe just a little bit.

The difference is that our farm club has produced that last 3 AHL best players. Finally getting good UFAs to compliment our interior core..which is still made up with guys brought up through Rochester/Portland is exactly what we should be doing.

If this NFL lockout doesn't get resolved...can we just start the NHL season earlier?

absolutely not. i just wonder if hes too involved if that makes sense. i like him being hands on, i just worry he may overstep a boundary or two.

Has Pegula ever come across as the type to interfere with hockey decisions? The only way he's involved is with the money, being around the front office process in order to learn, and with a lot of face time to sell his family approach and the organization as a whole.

That's actually a lot of involvement, but only in positive ways.

i dont know. hes owned the team a whole 4 months. he seems to be a very hands on owner. which is good, i just wonder if hes too involved.

i guess any owner who is truly passionate about winning would be this involved. i dunno. he just seems VERY involved.

just how i feel. i have no beef with him spending and changing the culture of the team.

i remember there was quite the honeymoon with golisano too, in 03 when he bought the team.

I think he is involved because players may still have reservations about coming to Buffalo. Our previous ownership made the team unappealing. I think Terry just provides additional support to convince players to come here to show that we've really changed.

I think Terry knows what his role is as an owner. He gave Regier the freedom to spend money. He's not in there telling Darcy who to sign, he's just influencing the players that Darcy and his team have targeted to play here.

Yup, but if players see this is a good organization that is successful, they'll want to come to Buffalo. Even if its not as glamorous as NYC or LA.

Obama has one. So Pegula is too qualified to get one of those worthless peace prizes then.

That an if they gave one to Terry, you'd have to think there'd be a cabal of people behind it headed by Glen Sather or the like hoping that by giving him the Nobel, he'd change his plans for improving the Sabres.

pegula should move his companies headquarters to buffalo, build a nice new building, create jobs.... that would certainly help the city and make it more "desirable"
