most of the time it takes a comedian to be able to say what is truly happening and critize the govt and or society, without fear of backlash

The parties aren't the problem. Professional politicians financially beholden to corporate interests are the problem.

Lewis Black is just a comedian, and not something more important. :P

He may be a comedian, but let's face facts here. He's right.

That was my description of something wrong with society. :P

Great question, CV. I think about this shit all the time, 'cause things are not good.

I think irony has a point about the Republicans, but Cross's counter is 100% true. 100% true.

My friendly reminder is that the question references society in general, not just the good 'ole USA.

I'm on vacation right now, enjoying my family here in Canada, reading two Vonnegut books at the same time, so my answer might be different 3 weeks from now, but in one sentence, right now, here's my stab at it.

The average person is too worried about what's in it for him or her, as opposed to what's in it for us, collectively.

I'll try to give my own answer or two:

Most of us spend more time interacting with media than interacting with each other.

Pharmaceutical companies spend more money on advertising than on research and development.

The owner of the Sabres hydro-fracks for money.

LOL I knew when Irony said "Republicans" everyone would jump on that shit, regardless of it being a joke.

ill be honest, i was joking. but i do think many many extreme conservatives are misguided people who seem to embrace their archaic way of life. there are many extreme examples of this. no one here seems to represent this way of thought, so its no skin off my ass.

i wont encompass everyone this way, but it is a source of frustration for me. i try to reason with some of them and it doesnt work. on the other hand, i ignore their points as well, so im no better then them in some ways.

Selfishness?

The way this is worded, though, it seems that it would only apply to Western society, which is, specifically the US, the most individualistic society in the world. We've really lost all balance there.

Alex, did you mean for this question to pertain to the entire world, or only the world most of us have known?

This thread would be empty if the title was "Sum Up What's Right with Society in One Sentence"...

me.

and you know what is wrong with society? people focus way too much on the negative. people claiming they hate people is the new fad. there are some perplexing and disappointing, and downright heartbreaking things that happen in society, but we often put ourselves on a pedestal and look down on everyone, and we "hate people." THATS whats wrong with society. people walking around with an unfounded chip on their shoulder.

you only get one life, whats the point of "hating people" and focusing on the negatives? enjoy yourself. take a damn walk, and watch birds and shit.

and yes, i know i hate everything. but i dont let anything ruin my day. i just do something i like and forget it.

I didn't, I intended for everything about it to be malleable based on how each person approached the question.
