So that's a full roster with 13 forwards, 8 d-men, and 2 goalies, with 2.745 mil to dump before the season starts.

Do we dump Kotalik and leave no reserve forwards, dump Morrisonn and still have another move to clear the other 750k?

Dump or trade both and pick up another player for about 2 mil, or dump both and leave the room for a call-up or two?

I feel the same way.

Wow. I didn't realize we were almost $3M over. Of course, I'm not really counting Kots in my mind. We don't really need Morrisonn. Getting rid of him would get us $2M wiggle room, which gives us a little more flexibility to make one more trade if we choose to.
1980, I think it was you who said in another thread, that we may just be done already, and after checking out your capgeek data above, I think you may be right. It's still July 1 and it's not even dark yet, and Darcy/Pegula have already accomplished so much! Who knows? They might still come up with another nice move, but even if they don't, wow, we've done very, very well!

It must have been someone else who said that, but they are probably done. I don't expect both Kotalik and Morrisonn to remain on the team. One or both will be moved somehow to clear space, and my guess is that Darcy will keep that space for whoever might impress them enough in camp for either a roster spot or call-up duty.

Now sitting at $3.6 over the cap after Enroth's signing with only Gragnani left. Some players will need to be traded or cut. Kotalik has a NTC, which could suck as far as getting rid of his salary. I see any combination of Kotalik, Boyes, Hecht, Morrison, Sekera, and Leopold as being the most likely players moved out. What do you all think?

Kotalik to Rochester.

ShaMo traded or Rochester.

Problem solved.

Not a chance Sekera or Leopold are moved.

I don't understand why we keep discussing Kotalik and his NTC. It doesn't really matter what we do with him as long as his hit doesn't count against the cap. Minors. Problem solved. No one's being traded .

Do either one of those guys have two-way contracts? pretty sure no. I just wonder if they might put up a fight about playing in the AHL.

i'm sure if it comes down to playing in the ahl, or waiving his ntc to stay in the nhl, kotalik would be open to a trade.

The only players that can be moved without hurting the line-up are Kotalik and Morrisonn. Kotalik has the NTC, but he can still be sent to Rochester. Also, he could (should) agree to a trade if he'll get to play in the NHL as opposed to the AHL. Waiving him in order to send him to Rochester could result in another team picking him up along with full salary and cap number.

But...if Buffalo needs to bring him up for an injury he could get picked off by another team on re-entry waivers. In that case Buffalo would be on the hook for half the salary and half the cap number, with no player to show for it. That's a big risk, considering Kotalik wouldn't be a bad deal for some team at 1.5 mil.

Morrisonn is in the same boat as Kotalik, so sending them down is a good option, and if another team picks them up on initial waivers then fine. Getting them back in Buffalo in case of injury is a problem, so if they go to Rochester I doubt Regier would consider bringing them back up. Trading them is the best option.

I don't mind the general idea of trading Leopold, Hecht or Pominville, but their skill and experience can't be replaced by any current prospects, so the team would suffer. It's one thing to trade those players for equal value, an entirely different thing to trade them away just to get under the cap. We can afford to lose Kotalik and Morrisonn's skill level for nothing in return except maybe a mid rd pick.

They don't really have much of a say in the matter.

If they're assigned to Rochester, they show up. If they don't, they don't get paid. Simple as that.

If Kotalik had a NMC (no move clause) we'd have a problem, because that means we wouldn't be able to send him down to the minors. Since he has a NTC, he just can't be traded. We can send him to any level of hockey we want with whom we're affiliated with.

Seriously, Glenn Sather was an idiot handing him a no-trade clause. But, how has that helped him, anyways. He's been traded what... twice... maybe three times since then?

FWIW...

67.4 mil cap hit with 13 forwards, 7 d-men, 2 goalies, Kennedy's buyout hit, and Gragnani yet to sign. Gragnani should get about 850k for about a 68.25 cap hit and 4 mil to shed before the season. Ditching Kotalik won't be enough, and that's why I don't like Sekera's contract (which is 1 mil too high imo). Going with the minimum 12 FWs, 7 d-men if Morrisonn is traded (two that can play FW in a pinch) is not bad at home. Dealing with an injury on a road trip will be though. Maybe if both Kotalik and Morrisonn are off the cap, they'll bring one guy to the full roster from camp and have two reserves with about 200k cap room.

For what feels like the ten millionth time, sending Morrisonn down to the minors along with Kotalik clears up $5 million.

For the ten millionth time, problem solved.

That wasn't his point I guess. His point was that having a short roster (forwards) might cause problems on road trips.

??????

Obviously I know this. I've been one of those people posting it a bunch of times. The problem Buffalo will be left with after they shed 5 mil to get under the cap is having only one reserve on the active roster in case of injury or a benching.

Most teams have at least a 22 if not a full 23 man roster. Going with only 21 players will cause a problem eventually, but as my last post suggested (which was the main point of it) that a decent option is to use the last 1 mil left if/when Kots and Morrisonn get ditched, to bring up the best prospect from camp.

So sending Kotalik and Morrisonn to Rochester solves the cap problem, but it doesn't solve the roster problem. It seems the best case scenario is being able to fit 22 players under the cap, make do with only two reserves. As we know injuries can pile up fast.
