Can't Pegula buy First Niagara Bank, and then call the arena whatever he wants?

Live from Pegula Park, Sabres vs Leafs, brought to you by Pegula Bank and Trust. Anything bought or sold there could have his face printed on the Pegula bucks.

Seriously, I do hate the corporate naming game. I'd much rather see "the Forum", "Boston Garden", "Buffalo Memorial Aud", and so on. There's no character to a place named after a business.

i disagree. some stadiums and arenas sound ok. amway arena in orlando, and comerica park sound fine. HSBC didnt sound bad, didnt have the same ring to it that the original name had. itll take some getting used to.

phillys coresstate arena had a cool name for a few minutes before it was changed 19 times.

What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.

I am in now way a fan of Pegula's name being on the arena.

Too many bad Ralph Wilson memories. I love TPegs, but not enough for him to put his own name on the building. I'd rather bring in the money the naming rights bring in.

Oriole Park at *Camden* Yards (OPACY) The only thing Peter Angelos has done right is not sell the naming rights to the stadium. I think the stadium name should have something historical associated with it. We actually stole your architect:ConstructionPrior to Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the predominant design trend of big league ballparks was the symmetrical "multi-purpose stadium". Camden Yards was the first Major League downtown "retro" ballpark. The master plan was designed by international design firm, RTKL. The stadium design was completed by the architectural firm HOK Sport (now Populous), which had pioneered retro ballparks on the minor league level four years earlier with Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, New York.

Construction began in 1989, and lasted 33 months. Former Orioles owner Eli Jacobs favored naming the new field Oriole Park, while then-Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer favored Camden Yards. After considerable debate a compromise was reached to use both names.[5]

Stadium was built incorporating the railyard station for b&o railroad.

yeah, i missed a letter. however, i ALWAYS say it with an "m" on the end. it flows easier.

I was just bustin' your balls. I don't really care. Most people I know who live out of state say it the way you do. I like the name but if I were to change it I would want Blue Light as the sponsor. Night @ Blue Light (Arena). Catchy and still a sponsor. Plus not as sissy as a bank being ones sponsor.

I've seen a few branches of that bank down here in NC in Charlotte. That's gotta be the stupidest name for a bank. I wouldn't put my money in a bank with such a cryptic sounding name. Makes me wonder if it's run by cultists or Freemasons or some crazy shit like that.
In all seriousness though, do you know why it's called that? There's got to be an explanation for it, however silly it may be.

I don't know. A stadium named after a pyramid scheme? The name never sounded good to me, but that is a subjective thing.

I know what you mean, though, that some corporate names have been around so long that they sound natural to the ear. Wrigley Field, comes to mind.

Today stadiums are on such short naming contracts that your team's stadium might go through 2-3 different names in its lifetime. College football is the worst. Who even knows what the bowl games are called anymore? The Meineke Car Care Bowl...Papajohn’s.com Bowl...or my favorite, the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

From Wiki:

The Fifth Third name

Fifth Third's unusual name is the result of the June 1, 1908 merger of two banks, the Fifth National Bank and The Third National Bank, to become the Fifth Third National Bank of Cincinnati. Because the merger took place during a period when prohibitionist ideas were gaining popularity, it was believed that "Fifth Third" was better than "Third Fifth," which could be construed as a reference to three "fifths" of alcohol. The name went through several changes over the years, until on March 24, 1969, the name was changed to Fifth Third Bank.

I still call the place Marine Midland Arena, (I also still refer to the 'Ralph" as Rich Stadium)

The W.O.R.S.T. name ever is the amphitheater at Florida Fair grounds that I go to see concerts at: 1-800-Ask-Gary Amphitheater. I kid you not....it's horrible

See!

I like it when the fans give the place their own name, which is usually far better than the official name. Some well known nicknames of hockey barns:

The Shark Tank
The Dome
The Igloo
The Joe
The Ice Palace
The Pond
The Aud

If you are good at that sort of thing you might want to try this Sporcle quiz:

Can you name the famous Big 4 stadium nicknames?

2 men enter, 1 man leaves. i think phil is going for something that makes it sound very difficult for the opposing team to play at. i like the sentiment.
