my axolotl tank.. im thinking about getting rid of the filter. the plants clean the water and oxygenate the water well... but its a ballsy move. plus im buying a HUGE tank soon.

I wouldn't get rid of the filter. There's not near enough natural filtration in there. I'm sure your axolotl puts quite a bit of waste into the tank. You'd have to get it quite a bit more planted, and probably some freshwater snails

i remove waste, and i had snails and clams in the tank, but removed them. the snails get eaten and will impact the axies which will kill them. the clams were in the sand and thus hard to see (but you know where they are) but if one dies in the sand, itll crash the ammonia cycle. what you dont see is java moss, and that stuff is like super water cleaner. its in the corner by the rocks, growing. also in the hollow log floating, hoping itll grow out of the ends and provide cover.

if i did lose the filter, id have to do daily water changes, 20%

just as well, im getting a tank the same size, just longer, not as tall. thatll hold me over till i get my 75 or 120 gallon tank.

Saltwater, yeah. Not so much freshwater, but I have a friend that is an aqua freak - freshwater planted tanks, saltwater aggressive, reef, and fish only tanks, and I picked his brain quite a bit when we used to be neighbors.

I just found a sweet (used) 50gal cube at the local pet shop. It used to be their display tank - it's rimless with a pendant HO light and it's drilled with a center overflow. Absolutely gorgeous, and at $400, its a steal.
