ok. this sucks. i have the worst luck with electronics. in january 08, i got an HP dv2000. it died in august 09, mother board fried. i got a new HP dv4t in january 2010. sure enough, it died today. why? i dont know. the screen wont turn on, the wifi and sound icons are orange (blue means its on) and the number lock and caps lock buttons blink.

so i need a new laptop, and im sorry HP, but thats enough. im thinking about this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+C ... Id=2809292

anyways, some things i want is i want it small (screen 13 inches or smaller..) and i dont want a total hunk of shit.

also, to avoid this discussion later. no macs. not an option. i wont buy a fucking apple product.

phil, you are a toshiba guy. win me over.

given that boundaries, i saw anything but HP

my experiences with my dv5-1000 have been miserable, same things have happened. my screen gave out, my battery died, and my power cord broke. i dunno about new ones, all i can say is avoid HP, as i gather you know

i dunno. i STILL want an HP. but i wont because clearly, they dont work well. im very loyal to brands and shit. dunno why, but when im comfortable with something, im happy. for some reason, besides the short lifespan, i like HP alot. but i dont have alot of money to buy new computers.

and i want something that i can move around easily. i travel alot and take it with me.

Oh goodness... unless you want to be completely rid of all things 'Windows', I would stay away from Chromebooks. Like their tagline says, they are "nothing but the web".

Since you're in the market for a laptop, I would strongly recommend an Asus. They provide generally solid hardware, with great performance for price. I know they are not a brand that you would instantly think of, but for what it's worth, they are what I'd recommend (and what I use).

Here's a pretty good one

There are definitely cheaper options there for Asus (Different from Acer, just a clarification :) ), I honestly just threw out one of the first examples.

Best of luck on your search!

I second ASUS above all. All the geeky software engineers I know use ASUS.

If you're going to buy from Best Buy and you've had that bad of luck with your computers, get their protection plan then. It will be around 150 extra, but it'll save you money if it were to happen again.

If you don't, well don't complain if another laptop fries on you.

HP's are fine, the series you keep going to has had motherboard issues and continues to do so. Asus are good brands, Toshiba is like HP but probably your cheapest option with just as good of quality as any other. Sony, you're paying for a brand name over anything else as most of the Windows based computers are all really close to each other in everything.

Honestly, stay away from netbooks. If you want small, just get a 14 inch cheapo computer and spend around 300-400 bucks on it and it'll do just what a netbook will do, but will be a better overall computer.

i agree about the protection plan. that is my bad. but a computer shouldnt fry within 2 years no matter what.

i think asus sounds good, as does toshiba.

Ehhh... well, the thing with Asus is that they really gained speed through their development of netbooks. So interestingly enough, the smaller the Asus laptop gets, the more expensive it is.

I wouldn't recommend a netbook for day-to-day use anyway, but you're straddling that line as far as size goes. If price is an issue, Toshiba *is* a very serviceable brand, and much like Asus, they are on the rise recently. I just recommend Asus highly.

Oh I know they shouldn't fry, I think HP has just had problems with the DV series of laptops and motherboards in them.

My one friend has own ASUS and he loves them, they are expensive, and the one bigc24 posted is a good laptop for the price. You'd be very happy with that one.

I wouldn't get an HP again considering they mentioned possibly selling off their PC division. It would probably be a bitch to get fixed if that turns out to be the case.

Here's a tidbit of info - if you crack open your computer and look at the motherboard or other components, you've got a good chance of finding parts that ale made by - you guessed it - ASUS.

Incorrect. They announced that they would either spin the PC division off, or sell it outright. It was clearly stated they were getting out of hardware completely.

I do this shit for a living. I wouldn't have made the comment if I didn't know what I was talking about.
