Geez guys, it's not size that matters.

I spent 1K (because I'm fairly poor), and proposed at my favorite place to be. It was at Chalotte Beach (Rochester beach on the genesee mouth). It was almost perfect, I had just picked her up from the train station and we went straight for the beach (since it was winter, I had the element of a incoming lake effect storm, to say I want to get there before that happens). We walked as far as we could on the peer (not very far, too icy), and I walked back and said, maybe the boardwalk there would be fun. So I went in and sat down on one of the pavilions there, and sat her next to me and voila, got on my knee, asked the question, she said yes.

Whenever I go to Rochester I have to go to the lake, it's my favorite place in the whole wide world.

She couldn't stop taking pictures of it... this is one of them.

My advice, do whatever you damn well please, she gets the wedding, you get the ring and honeymoon

Ah, good stuff man, sweet story. You both look so happy in that pic.

in my opinion (as a 40 something woman)--a topaz ring wouldn't be a bad thing. When ring shopping with 2nd hubby 6 years ago, I told him I wanted a black onyx engagement ring. It had to be custom made (since most people don't do onyx for engagement purposes)--but I love it.

Who cares what her friends (or yours) think?

I love that you've got an onyx ring - I think it's a beautiful stone.

I don't know if you guys have ever seen "Blood Diamond" before, but after that movie, I don't know if I'll even want a diamond ring. I like the idea of another stone! Onyx sounds so cool!

My sister is paranoid she'll lose her ring and I know if I were ever in the position to be engaged I'd feel the same way. I wonder when the whole "diamond ring" tradition started...off to investigate...

part of the 'not diamond' (for me, anyway) is the relationship doesn't hinge on the stone. Spending mega-bucks on a ring doesn't 'prove your love' anymore than getting something more affordable. My onyx ring was just over $150---and it's unique.
And should you call off the engagement, she keeps the ring! Better to spend the REAL money after you've been married for 50 years.

Quick update for those of you who appreciate closure of long dead threads:

I did ask my lady to marry me, she said yes, we went ring shopping together, she picked out what she wanted (turns out she didnt want a diamond, but an 'aquamarine' stone, who knew?) and we're getting married at the beach in NC this Sunday! Woot.

Congrats! And I think it's cool to have something other than a diamond ring for an engagement. It was all just a marketing ploy by diamond dealers anyway.

That's great! Congratulations!

I actually want an emerald instead of a diamond. I want it to look like the Duchess of Cambridge's ring. :)

FYI, that's not true in NY. NYS case law says that the woman is given the ring on the condition that her and future husband will marry. If they end up breaking off the engagement, the contract is broken and she must return the ring. I, personally, like that.

I know someone who just got engaged and her ring was $25k. 4.2ct. total weight (2.7ct center stone surrounded by 1.5ct. smaller stones). It's very beautiful, but it's not something I would want. The price wasn't really an issue for him.

Congrats d00d! I was going to chime in with how I popped the question last summer, but since you're set up in that department, no need ;)

And I agree, the size of the rock shouldn't determine how strong the relationship is. If a person's significant other is going to say yes, it's because they want to merry them. Not because you can afford to have platinum bathtub taps and wipe your ass with $100 bills. If it's there, it's there. If not, kick'em out the door, crack a beer while watching a Sabres game and call it a day ;)

And Alex, that would be a totally awesome way of doing things, too.

Congratulations on the engagement! That's really exciting. :)

I was just reading the Wikipedia page cross posted about engagement rings and it got me wondering... Are rings traditionally given in Eastern cultures, like in Asian countries?

Haha, thanks guys, much appreciated.

People keep expecting me to be freaking out right about now, but i'm pretty calm and ready. Maybe it helps that we're just about to close on a house, which is responsible for most of my daily stress now, and the wedding is only secondary stress. Hell, i'm looking forward to getting away for a week and not having to deal with inspectors, realtors, mortgage agents, etc etc.
