Nothing official just yet, but John Tavares and Tyler Myers on verge of big, multi-year contract extensions with NYI and BUF, respectively.

Both deals are expected to be in 6 year range, give or take a year, and worth an average of $5.5M, give or take a few hundred thousand.

As I said, not "done" yet but close to being put to bed. Both Tavares and Myers have one year left remaining on their entry-level deals.

I thought I'd get to this first, but you beat me to it, Tom.

Anyways, let's talk about how awesome this is, and how if what McKenzie says is true, that is one great cap hit for a guy that could probably get more after this season.

5.5m seems a bit much.

When does Myers become a UFA? I'd guess his next contract would be till before his RFA ends.

I agree that the price is a bit high, but it's probably not as bad as what he could command after this season. Take a risk and sign him to this , or have him have a bounce back season where he plays like he did at his best for the whole year and demand even more. I like the first option.

Maybe a little premature but obviously the Sabres see a whole lot of potention in the kid. I would rather sign him a little high now than in a year have to sign him to even more or lose him.

Well, better to get this done than to wait to see what Drew Doughty is going to get.

Myers will become a UFA in the summer of 2016 (age 26), after seven full years of service. A three year deal (an extension from 2012-2015) would leave him as a RFA. Anything longer and he'll be a UFA after the contract expires. If the deal will be longer than 3 years, it may as well go for as long as possible. 6 mil is too high for him right now, and he'll probably be worth it shortly into the contract, but it would still require paying him based more on potential than performance. 5 mil sounds about right but we'll see. The most important thing is that the organization is now being proactive in keeping it's best talent.

People may consider the price high, but the Sabres are clearly buying off some of Myers' UFA years by doing this.

It's a good tactic, since having to pay for those UFA years when they come will always be more expensive.

Yeah, six mil for 3-4 years is too high, but every year added on after that makes the deal more fair.

$5.5 million doesn't seem so high for Myers, considering most of us were figuring he'd be in the $6.5-$7 million at the end of this season.

I'd sign him for 5.5 right now for years to come.

It is high now, but this kid will be a great defenseman for us.

Just what I'm thinking. He will be a bargain later on.

Driving his own vehicle to deliver season tickets. You gotta love Terry.
I bet Roy stepped out of the Limo with a "cool" "I got your tickets, bro" and handed it to a nice old Lady ;)

on topic
I just hope they overpay him by much. He has a ton of potential but he is still a very young defenseman who had an outstanding rookie season and an average second year. 5mil long term is quite risky.

no way man price is just right. Myers had an off year. He's gonna be a future Norris Trophy Winner. With Regher and Eherhoff teachin him the ropes it'll all pan out in the end. And people saying its a bit much would be shooting themselves in the head.

I'm glad Buffalo is paying to keep it's talent but Darcy needs to be very careful you don't want overpay and end up like the Hawks and have to trade off some good players because you have too many players with fat contracts. Don't get me wrong Myers deserves a big raise but I think with the other players this team added Darcy has to be very careful not to overpay a handful of players or has to make sure that the one's that are making the big money are the guys you are planning to build this team around for years to come.
I'm still not a fan of the Ehrhoff deal. Not saying I don't like him as a player just saying I think he is overpaid for what he brings. Plus I think we have to many young guys on defense that will be ready to play in the near future and I think his stats were blown up because of playing with the Sedin's and Kesler. I guess time will tell in that deal but I guess it's better than what the Hawks paid Campbell so I guess I can just shut my mouth then.

You think $4 million per for what Ehrhoff will bring production-wise is a bit much?

Remember, regardless of what they pay him in each separate year, the average cap hit is all that matters because that constitutes how much room we have.
