This is awesome. People worried about the cap for the future need to realize that we have A LOT of fat being trimmed off next year. Gaustad, Hecht, Kotalik, Boyes and Morrisonn come off our books for a total of $14,900,000 in cap space.

We still need to re-sign or replace those players...

very true. but tyler myers salary is not the place to make cuts, in my opinion. *cough*POMINVILLE*cough*

Pominville's one of our best two way players. I think we should at least re-sign Guastad and than see how Boyes does.

pominville can very much be a useful asset at 3 mil a season. i dont care for him, but he can help the club. but that 5.5 cap hit could be turned into a much larger asset then pominville.

goose, meh. im over him. hes a useful player, but at this point, i wouldnt be heartbroken to see him move on as well.

Myers, Miller, Vanek. Pretty much the foundation of the team at this point.

at this point, myers is overpaid. hes still a kid developing. he made some SERIOUS mistakes last year, and he made some SERIOUS strides in development last year. myers isnt the second coming of jesus in other teams fans eyes. kinda like how my homie rask isnt in everyones eyes here ;) ...but theres a good chance he will develop into a very very good defensemen. hes already pretty damn good. i wont say a norris candidate yet, but he has that potential, for real.

He wasn't bad last year. The first half he was off but the second he was fine.

and those are the samer people that would have went bonkers if we signed Brian Campbell a year before his contract ended.. Good to see the Sabres are being proactive instead of seeing a player of his potential walk or demand much more after this year..

I'm drunk but I'll post because I can.

I don't think this contract was the right move. It will put a lot of pressure on the kid because people will compare the 5.5mil, even if his contract hasn't started yet.

The contract is a gamble.
If he will become the d-man he is supposed to be it's a great contract, if he gets in injury troubles or doesn't develope anymore it's a bad contract that will haunt us.

This contract has no effect on his play next year.

So I don't care what people are going to say about him next year, because from the looks of things, he will hopefully continue to be the beast he started to be last year. And now he doesn't have to worry about a contract for another 8 years.

They call this kid "The Big Easy". He isn't going to crumble under the pressure. He's already learned the lesson of not trying to do too much, and come a long way in his development. He's probably going to be overpaid when his contract kicks in, but will almost assuredly be underpaid in the middle and later years.

As to Goose, I'd like to see them re-up him when his contract is up, but not for the same money. He's a grit and character guy. You need guys like that on the team, but they should not be eating up much of your cap space.

Pominville will need a pay cut, but is a good player to have. Even though his soft style and pussification in the corners drives me nuts, he is able to put the puck in the net, and is a good player on the PK. Another piece, though not a centerpiece, in my mind.

Ham

I doubt it will, because even if he got 4 million that's still a lot of money. 5.5 is pretty cheap, for him, IMHO.

It would have been nice to have held on to Campbell...but things happen for a reason.

Not for what he made in Chicago. He's a good player, but he was never that good.

It might have been nice to keep him but, Campbell was no where near a 7.1 million dollar d-man.

Sometimes, teams don't spend the money on a player's true worth; they spend the money to get that last piece in place they think they need.

It worked for Chicago.

What did we offer him? Like 3 years at$17 million? Campbell knew he was going to get paid and Chicago even admitted they overpaid for him...and of course, Brian wins a Cup.

That's because Schenn was paid chump change compared to Myers.

Didn't Schenn get payed 3 million? How is that chump change compared to a better overall defensemen's contract?
