You guys are walking a very fine line. I have ZERO tolerance for racist shit.

I'm not trying to say East Buffalo is a bad neighborhood that you should be scared in. I'm saying that it's a place where most of us would be in the minority because of our skin color. That can feel uncomfortable right? Most of us might not feel 100% confident there and might be extra-sensitive to racial remarks, whether we're willing to admit that or not. Well, for a black man, especially a black man playing freakin hockey, our world is probably not a place that puts him at ease. A black man playing hockey in some of these places might feel as out of place as one of us in East Buffalo. So again I think it might be helpful for those who think this banana-throwing was funny to use the East Buffalo analogy in imagining how the guy might feel.

Racist insults directed at a white person are not the same as those directed at a black person for the simple reason that a racial epithet aimed at blacks carries with it historical connotations of violence and brutality that "cracker" simply does not have.

For centuries racial insults flung at black were not merely insults, traded between equals, but rather threats of violence that every black person knew had been backed up by actual brutality countless times in the past. These insults were verbal terrorism used to maintain social control of the black population.

A banana peal, symbolizing that Wayne Simmons is not a person, but rather an ape, is not the most vicious or mean-spirited racial insult, but it is on a continuum of violent words and actions that have a long, dark history.
