He was signed for 800K.

Before we moved Paille we had a million left.

Not a cap clearing move to bring in biron, we could have brought him without trading a player with salary against our cap.

gotta eat the Lalime contract though if Marty was brought in. Wishful thinking that maybe they were not impressed with Lalime's last game and it prompted this move? probably

I do not understand why we can pay Hecht the money that we do and trade away Paille for some future floaters that we'll never use.

Trading Hecht (and a 2nd rounder, because it might need that) for a 5th rounder would have been a better move.

BOOOOOOOOOO

We're stuck with Hecht's bloated contract....3 seasons of it.
This wasn't an either / or situation.

Yeah, I don't expect Paille to score 16 goals this year. So it's probably straight up for a 3rd, which I'm fine with. Logjam at forward, Paille was a player who could reasonably be moved, and we free up cap space and get a pick. A good move, in my opinion. I liked Danny, a lot of the time, but he really did disappear. And with Mac leapfrogging him and Kennedy as well, not to mention some of the younger prospects, Paille was going to be riding pine more often than not.

And seriously, do any of you think Paille's going to make that much of a difference for Boston that it's going to matter he went to a divisional rival? It's not like we traded Vanek or Miller to a division opponent. It's Paille.

I too would have like to have seen Mair or Hecht go for Paille, but you have to realize that no one probably wanted either of those players. I mean what can you get for Mair, a career minus fourth liner that's getting long on years?

I'm glad you can see the future of this team. We might as well just not draft anyone with our 3rd and maybe 4th picks this year.

Paille was dead weight. Not to say we don't have more left to trim but nobody wants the other withering twigs right now. Glad we moved him since I've always thought of Paille as "Oh yeah....that guy"

Just a word of note: Draft picks do not necessarily mean drafting and developing, from scratch. They are a powerful currency in trades, and will serve well come the trading deadline, or in consideration of any major acquisition (should it occur.)

They're "poker chips".

They're one of the ways we can bundle off a player such as Hecht, should the decision to release/trade him be made, or become an available option.

What GM in his right mind would take Hecht's contract?

if hecht can continue to play at a good level his contract would be a little easier to swallow. say a team looking for that last veteran to help push them over the edge, even if we all know hecht ain't that guy. plus like ice said picks allow us to sweeten deals to rid of crappy players who are dead weight. I thought paille was worth a bit more but boston doesn't seem to be a top of the conference this year as of yet. they may have fucked with the chemistry a bit too much. i really hope they don't get taylor hall, or kabanov. I'm still hoping we can some how meander our way up to drafting a guy like hall, fowler, or kabanov to give us another superstar, without dropping a guy like myers.

This fact is commonly overlooked. Darcy could take out an ad on NHL.com stating that he'd give Hecht away for a conditional 4th rounder, and I doubt any GM in the league would take it. His contract makes him almost unmovable.

I support this trade. For too many years, this organization has sat on players with 'potential' far too long, and watched them walk away for nothing down the road. Darcy had an asset that had some value, and turned it around for a pick, or maybe 2. Successful organizations make moves like this with regularity.

I hope Paille has some success with regular ice time, but when Looch comes back, I see him riding the pressbox again once Milan suits back up. We get a pick or two, and Boston gets a kid to stick upstairs.

Sabres win this one.

Some of the more reasonable comments on boston.com (the ones that clearly aren't uneducated twats) seem to think they may even send him down to Providence.

I think I'd be surprised to see that, but the fact that it's even a reasonable possibility tells me Darcy won this trade.

Win one for the D-man.

i was kind of surprised when i went to Yahoo and saw this. i knew we had an overflow of forwards but a trade wasnt a thought to me. (might have been because ive been too busy to really watch any games/follow the team yet). in any case. i will miss him, i liked his last name and the way that, at quick glance, i would want to pronounce it like Pele (i know, a bit retarded).

best of luck to him in Boston and in his second Winter Classic.

I would crack up laughing if they tried to send Paille down and the Sabres claimed him on waivers.

A 3rd rounder for nothing!

Seriously though, just clearing the roster space without sending Myers back to juniors or Kennedy back to Portland put a smile on my face.

I like the trade. Like many, I would rather have seen a couple other players go first, but I understand that it isn't a matter of who we want to see gone, but who is moveable and for a decent return.
