You know a goalie hockey stick only weighs about, 750 grams or Only 1.6 pounds, nowhere near 5 pounds.
And it would have hit him in the shins, and where it would have hit is padded. Lucic wouldn't of felt a thing. And in this situation, the momentum of Lucic hitting Miller is far greater than the momentum of a stick swinging towards a player.
i swear that there is no one on this board who's played a physical sport at a competitive level. the physics alone of swinging a stick at someone would hurt. okay, you caught me exaggerating, you brilliant man, you. 1.5 pounds swung like that can break bones, and with all the pressure from the swing hitting at a point about a half an inch wide, there's a good chance he would have busted his shins.
hockey pucks only weigh 6 ounces (less than 1/3 the weight of the average stick) and they break through pads and hurt players...
ps, momentum is mass times velocity, so of course the momentum of two people colliding is bigger than a stick hitting him.
I've been hit with sticks before playing hockey and know how much they can hurt, but the area where it was swinging would have hit pads, yes it could be a concentrated blow but would not have done anything. The pads are designed to protect and stop blows from solid objects.
When you see a puck or a stick hurt someone, it hits the part of the body that has no padding on it. Take a shot in the shins and you won't feel anything, take a shot on the inner thigh, you'll be limping because it hurts.
I'm also sure a puck doesn't break through pads. It could do some bruising if it hits on pads, but not break through them.
I'm curious, do you play hockey Pat? Have you ever seen a professional level set of pads? Even my shitty shin pads don't let me feel most of the blows I've taken to my shins. I've only had one shot off my shin pads that hurt or I could feel through my pad. And I have the bottom line shin pads.
Slash guards go where the elbow pads and the gloves have space between them. I know why players wear them, I got slashed right in that area before and have a nice scar from a stick because of it. I know sticks are dangerous and are weapons.
I watched the replay again, maybe the tip of the blade would have hit in the stomach area, maybe, but I'm betting Lucic's hockey pants go high enough where it would have caught them or it would have hit the pants at some location.

As I said in the GDT, the call on Rivet was horseshit. The Bruins player was holding onto Rivet's stick like it was the last fucking raft on the Titanic.
