Cops don't mace people because its fun. They do it because it's a tool they have in their arsenal against hippy assholes who won't fucking listen.

I'm not saying that the protesters are wrong for doing what they do, but from the POV of a cop, they have a job to do.

I hear you NYI but there is a difference between cops and campus police. This seems more like a dumbass flexing his muscles because he can rather than doing it as a necessary last resort. No one was violent, there were no tent cities with crappy living conditions....just some college kids protesting peacefully. I just don't see justification for his actions on any level. They only make sense in the context of the cop being a bully IMO.

you know that most state campuses' police are state troopers right? ny's are all troopers, but they just wear the other uniform.

private campuses though, they're just security guards with a mag lite and cap gun.

Ok, first their arms may be down to their sides but are locked together. It would be impossible to pull them apart this way unless you use force, and I mean significant force....breaking bones force. THAT would be excessive force.

Now for the pepper fogger. Most people do not understand that it is NON-LETHAL and has been used successfully and highly recommended for unlawful assembly. Although he may be a little close, it is definitely not close enough to cause any sort of injury. The most it would do is cause someone to have respiratory distress do to asthma or something.

These videos no way tell the whole truth either way. If the campus/state have a law about not blocking sidewalks, then they are breaking the law. If the police gave the protesters warning that it's an illegal assembly and they refuse to obey the order to move, then this is absolutely an appropriate use of force.

I never condone any excessive use of force. The Oakland cops who shot the guy video taping them, with a less lethal projectile, excessive. That was plainly obvious....

Even if you feel that was an appropriate use of force, I think you're missing the point. That point being that Sgt. Pepper Spray has done more than any other individual I can think of TO HELP THE OCCUPY MOVEMENT.

He was doing what was ordered by his supervisor which was probably ordered by someone in charge of the university (although they will never admit it). He didn't help the "movement," the media and the idiots in charge of the university made it.


OH and notice the police are not worried about the other idiots on the grass locking arms. They are not blocking the sidewalk so they were not breaking the law.

This is a reason why I don't understand why people are so upset over this incident. They used the lowest level of force possible to remove them. There is no reason for the officers/chief to be suspended, there is no reason for a separate commisssion to investigation, and there is absoutely no reason for the state attorney general to get involved.

The university is now paying for any medical bills incurred by the students and asking for the 9 or 10 people arrested for their charges to be dropped. Absolute bullshit!!!

The school had no other choice than to pepper spray the students? Like say.....let them continue exercising their constitutional rights? Seems like it may have been something along the lines of....

"Well these kids are protesting...this sucks. They don't seem to be breaking any laws. What can we do?"
"Um......you know sir.....technically they are on a sidewalk."
"Okay then....pepper spray 'em."

Also.....it's bullshit that the school is asking for charges to be dropped and paying medical bills? Wow dude.
