Oh, and I also want to mention that one time during an English class freshman year of college, a student said something was gay in the same context you did. I can tell you, the professor (who I'm pretty sure was a lesbian) did not take it lightly and embarrassed him in front of the class. No, it is not socially acceptable to call something gay when you mean something is stupid.

Think about what you're saying when you call something "gay" and you really mean "bad". You're basically saying being gay is bad. Do people say it all the time? Fuck yeah. But I'd still always point out to my teenage students what they were saying when they said it. When you're in high school, youre almost guaranteed to be around a gay person who hasn't come out yet. I know of at least two friends that didn't come out until college.

And now he's out again...I hear a lot of people are saying that he should retire. I don't think so, but he should really sit out this whole season.

I agree with you...but.....I have a bunch of gay friends and I say things are gay all the time around them. Shit, they say it more than me. To a kid who hasn't come out yet I can totally see how it would be a big deal but to grown ups, in my experience they can handle it just find without getting insulted. They concider it just a word, much like stupid or jerk. It's all about the intentions. I wouldn't go throwing it around in public, much like I wouldn't call someone a cocksucker in public but that's my offical greeting to most of my life long friends.
