Yeah, I get it Yhoshi. :| Its just frustrating to have everything judged in black & white terms. Bitch about the folks who may be too polite to whoop it up, as if their noise would make all the difference. Haven't you ever been at a sporting event where a couple of drunken idiots decide to stand up? They block the folks right behind them, who stand up to see, who are then blocking others, etc... There is more going on than just fan noise. Hasn't Buffalo always been like this? We aren't lesser sports fans just because we are quieter. Are we?

Manners. Buffalo is a Midwest city, and Midwesterners are known for common sense & manners. The old farts have better manners than the younger fans because it was drilled into them. Plus, they don't want to spoil anyone else's fun by obstructing their view or being obnoxious. They have experienced the obnoxiousness themselves and are too polite to inflict it upon others. They paid good money for those seats; so did the folks around them. Why ruin it for others?

The flip side of this is the rowdy obnoxious people. Yeah, they're having a good time, whooping it up in the stands, yelling & standing & cheering. I am 5'4" tall. Once these folks start standing up I'm screwed. I can't see over them at all. This makes me angry & frustrated. I'll cheer as much as the next guy, but SITTING DOWN!!!

So following all this logically, the old farts shouldn't go because they aren't rowdy enough. Folks like me, who don't like to stand, shouldn't go because we complain about not seeing. Therefore the FNC fills up (or not) with the Big Rowdies. This sounds like Philadelphia to me...AND WE AREN'T PHILADELPHIA-TYPE FANS.

Yeah, I'm in a pissy mood and this will get torn apart, but so what. Buffalonians are polite, friendly people. This is reflected in the amount of noise we make at the game. Its just the way we are. I don't love the Sabres any less than the giant standing in front of me, I just show it differently. We are just nice people.

:bang:

i agree with most of this, but i dont consider buffalo a midwest city at all.

Games were different at the Aud for sure. They ran a "sit down you're rocking the boat" campaign, and started 'family' seating. This has spread to the entire arena now, and it sucks. Political correctness has taken over, and isn't going anywhere. I used to get hammered at games, shout and swear like a sailor. That was the culture then. They wanted to change the culture to bring in more demographics. Problem is they changed the atmosphere. I know for a fact the smoke filled, testosterone charged atmosphere was better. I know a lot of people will disagree, but kids grow up different now. I grew up old school, hard knocks style. Sure, when I was first introduced to that culture, it was a shock, but I grew up, and became a man none the worse for it. Welcome to the hand sanitizer generation, people.

The thing is, we know we can get loud. Bills games are a prime example. When that stadium is full, the atmosphere is incredible, especially when the Bills are winning.

There's no way to match that at FNC. There aren't nearly enough people. At the same time, I still think it goes back to the whole people going to games simply because they can afford to issue. That's what really ticks me off.

I started a thread last year about how dead it was in the arena, or seemed to be, even on TV. This is nothing new, but it does seem even worse this year. One thing I'd say might really help is a change in cheerleading technique. Organ music is nice and traditional in hockey, but doesn't really fire a crowd up. When it's basically the only form of entertainment in between whistles, what do you really expect? Especially when the organist is just so bad. The guy's rythm is so lacking that it makes me feel for his wife, not to mention that even if he stayed on beat, has all the rythmic flare of an eighth grade tuba student. Can the organist, and for god's sake get a new cheer to throw in there once in a while. Or speed up that funeral dirge "Bum, Bum, bum bum bum...Let's go Buffalo" shit. Who is going to get excited by a cheer lead by music that sounds like an elephant on traqualizers who swallowed a huge harmonica?

Oh hell yes they were! That was (at least in the 70's and 80's) a hella good atmosphere there! Everyone stood up when The Sabres scored. The crowd only whined when the referees made bad calls against us - and made those piercing, sharp whistling sounds. The organist was an expert at picking the right tune at the right time to get the crowd going - if he needed to at all.

It was an older crowd though. A good, solid working class crowd. The few kids that were there were old enough to not get freaked out about anything - though I don't remember much obscenity. If someone yelled something out, everyone heard it. "Hit em' with your your purse Gerry!!"

The changing demographics altered that. The more expensive seating changed who was going to the games. By the time I had kids, it became too expensive to go to most of the games anymore; let alone have seasons. Splitting seasons worked for a few years. The influx of less hockey sophisticated, higher income ticket buyers; who often took their kids, changed a lot of things at the games.

I miss those times greatly; but have to accept the times changing. Personally, I like the home games against Toronto and Montreal. Are their fans a bit rude? More like enthusiastic - though they can be obnoxious at times. The last home game against Toronto was the best time I've had at a game in years. Competing fans brought out the best in everyone.

In many arenas and stadiums around the world, the true fans are out in full force. Without that being the case here in Buffalo, it is what it is, and has been for some time.

The only way it's going to get louder is if Terry Pegula makes good on what he said he would; and by doing so awakens the fans. Genuine passion and excitement for The Sabres will leave the casual fans little choice but to become part of the atmosphere, or be the odd one's out in attendance.

I agree completely with Mike, Buffalo is not apart of the midwest. I thought the midwest starts west of the ohio valley.

Anyway, I do agree that Buffalonians, in general, are polite. There is a reason why Buffalo is called the city of good neighbors.

I remember how exciting the arena was back in 2006-2007. I didn't go to a home game where the fans weren't cheering and having a good time. We haven't had much to cheer about lately, but I do really miss that atmosphere.

I agree with what Yhoshi is saying a bit, but I also agree with the rest of you. Perhaps cheering and excitement would help the Sabres gain some confidence and give some genuine home ice advantage. It gets into the head of the opposing team a bit. On the other hand, it's hard to cheer for lackadaisical play.

Maybe it's like a vicious cycle!

I'm putting this on the team. For the last couple years they've had a poor record of letting the other team score first. They have been outplayed many times, and out shot. Hard to get into a game for fans when they're habitually doing this. The times they've started out strong; they've got the crowd going, only to piss away their lead, and let down the fans. Occasionally they maintain good play, and keep the crowd in the games. This needs to be reversed.

As has been mentioned; it is a two way street; but I think the team needs to pick it up more than do the fans....

This is a very good possibility. I saw Queensryche about a month ago. I sat front row and we didn't stand up. But it was because there were older people behind us and I wanted to but it just felt rude. I was at the edge of my seat singing and cheering but I wasn't going crazy and jumping around like I did when I saw Coheed and Cambria. During the show, Geoff Tate even called out the fans and said that they were so uptight and not standing up. What I noticed is that the only people who were standing were the people who were towards the front but way off to the sides....and that's because they weren't in anybody elses way. Sorry if this is typed badly, I'm in a hurry lol

Oh, and another observation is that the whole crowd stood up for probably the last 5 songs. It was because everyone knew it was almost over so standing wouldn't be a hassle to everyone. So I stood and then everyone stood and they were energetic for the last 15-20 minutes of the show.

Queensryche eh? Probably everyone was sitting because they're all old burnouts whose glory days were in the 80's. Sorry, but there's gotta be a price for admitting something like that.
