To me, they should name the conferences the Gretzky, Howe or Yzerman, Lemieux, and Orr conferences.

Because as we all know, those were huge names in the league, plus each conference they would be named for their team is playing in it that they had their entire or best years of their careers in.

Why are the Florida teams in our conference? They're a lot closer geographically to the other eastern conference than they are ours. Why not have the New York or Pennsylvania teams in ours...

Why would you want the NY and Pennsylvania teams in our conference? That's just all sorts of fucked up that you'd want something like that....

As I mentioned in another realignment thread (maybe they could be merged?), this looks like it is roughly a time zone alignment - Eastern, Central, Mountain, and West. That is why the Florida teams are in the same division/conference as the Sabres. It will certainly make it easier to follow your team when playing on the road against other conference teams.

I like the alignment. As a resident of Florida it means I get to see the Sabres live and on tv much more often.

A couple of questions for discussion:
1) What happens to the Prince of Wales and Campbell Trophies?
2) What are going to be the new names of the conferences?

I hope they don't go with the names of people (which become outdated quickly), nor the old NHL division names. Keep it simple and geographic. I'm okay with naming them for the time zones.

...except that the only conferences where all the teams are in the same timezone are conferences C and D. Conference A has a mix of Mountain and Pacific, and Conference B has a mix of Eastern and Central.

It also makes no sense to me geographically speaking how Montreal has to travel to Florida 3 times a year and vice versa.

Yes, I am so glad the NHLPA is going to cause a lockout, too.

the NHLPA cant cause a lockout.

A lockout happens through league management, and only happens if the league wants it. A strike however, is what the NHLPA CAN do and cause, but they wont

ok, either way. the odds of their not being some sort of work stoppage is minimal right now.

you know, i think this might help PREVENT a work stoppage.

think about it. the NHLPA rejects this switch now, but it isnt really a sticking point for them. THis gives the NHLPA a concession to use during the new CBA talks. The NHL will win with the new realignment, and the NHLPA will win with something else that they want

You're exactly right, but exactly how much time will it take the NHL to figure out what they want to give back. Either way, this is still the NHLPA's fault, whether they can "impose a lockout" or not, they'd still be the damn cause of it.

it also could have been because the realignment was awful, as saw by the union

the NHLPA exists to promote the best interests of the players and, if the realignment was not, then they did their duty in rejecting it.

Any work schedules should be done with the consent of both parties, with them working together to make the best senario for both sides involved, and not one side shoving an unfavourable schedule dow the throats of the other party.

I suspect that teams like Buffalo, toronto, montréal and boston had a decent amount of say in this, in order to avoid the long travel trips that having TB and Florida in the same conference entails

THe reverse is also true, and more damaging. If you played for a team such as tampa, would you really want to increase your travel distance, and play four northern teams?

I'll be honest, I absolutely loathe the proposed realignment. And honestly, it really isn't fair that the conferences aren't equal, so I can see why the union wouldn't like it either.

Statement from the NHLPA
http://www.nhlpa.com/news/media-release ... ealignment

Quote:
Toronto (January 6, 2012) – National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) Executive Director Don Fehr issued the following statement this evening regarding the League’s realignment proposal:

“On the evening of December 5, 2011, the NHL informed the NHLPA, that they proposed to put in place a four-conference format beginning with the 2012-13 season. As realignment affects Players’ terms and conditions of employment, the CBA requires the League to obtain the NHLPA’s consent before implementation. Over the last month, we have had several discussions with the League and extensive dialogue with Players, most recently on an Executive Board conference call on January 1. Two substantial Player concerns emerged: (1) whether the new structure would result in increased and more onerous travel, and (2) the disparity in chances of making the playoffs between the smaller and larger divisions.

IF you are so deadset in your ways, then why do you bother to post on this at all? All that you are doing is wasting your time and mine.

I am more than willingly to continue this discussion if someone is truly willing to discuss such things, and not just let all that i post go through one ear and out the other, while keeping one's tin foil hat on.

I am through with talking about this with you, until you are willing to take off your tin foil hat, and provide profitable discourse

have a merry Christmas

WOAH! I wasn't directing this at you, man! Sorry if you thought so.

I'm willing to reason, I just found this funny. My bad for offending your opinion, which you are free to have, as I am mine.
