Q: Would you mind maybe opening up and telling us what it's like dealing with a concussion? How has it affected your season and also, is it different for a goalie than for a skater?

Miller: My issue is that every time it happens it affects your focus and concentration. You feel like you have ADD. You feel like you have extreme ADD when you have the headaches and the uncomfortable off feeling. I think history can kind of show that I'm a very intense, focused person. And when I can't even get through like a 10-to-15 minute task at home, which I can usually sit down and do, something's wrong.

Q: What kind of tasks?

Miller: Anything. Like, if I tell myself I'm going to sit down and just watch a movie, read a book, whatever, 10 or 15 minutes and then I'm just like, spacing out. That's one of the symptoms. It's frustrating and it's something that I think is misunderstood about concussions, especially in sports. It's like, "Oh, you got your bell run." And when you're cleared to play, it's like, "It's been seven days. You're fine. You're clear and you should be fine." Well, your brain controls everything in your body, even emotions. Like ... you feel depressed. You feel like you can't focus and obviously if you go on the ice and try to play hockey at the highest level, as a goaltender with pucks coming at you and trying to maintain awareness and read the plays, it's definitely not a great situation.

Pretty much like I feared. This sucks but confirms a lot of my hunches.

You can tell from his interview last night how frustrated he is with himself. He said he doesn't know what's wrong and why he can't get his game back. I hope it's not post-concussion syndrome.

I think it is because I have never seen him play this bad.

I like winning but a players long term health and wellness after leaving the game is more important to me. I like him as a person and as a player. If his personality is being affected because of this then he is obviously not in any position to be playing. This is not a pulled muscle or twisted ankle you can suck up and play through. No one is manly for playing with PCS.

Well, we're really not winning with him in either.

I agree on resting him now for the sake of his career's longevity. I think every athlete with concussions should look at Sidney Crosby and see how serious he is taking it. Concussions aren't something to fuck with.

Concussions are a weird thing though. You'll see them knock a player out for a month, a year, or just a week.

Crosby got rung pretty badly and his was a serious concussion. Giroux got rung badly and ended up with one this year but was only out for about 5 games and he's fine now.

They affect the individuals differently. Honestly it looks like it is affecting Miller in more ways than we want it to.

I'm all in for sitting him and letting him just train and work with it until he feels 100% confident in returning to a high level of play.

I think most players who come back from a concussion within a week aren't taking it seriously enough. The culture in pro sports of all kinds is to suck it up, be a man, and get out there and play. I was watching ESPN the other day and they were talking about how there is unrest in the Penguin's locker room because there are some players who do not believe he should be taking this long to recover from a concussion (or maybe more than one, I don't really know). Obviously I'm no doctor, but I would have a tendency to err on the side of caution with brain health.

I just think when it comes to your brain, why take chances? Concussions can lead to all sorts of mental and emotional changes

I def did some stupid shit when I played sports. Took a couple playing lacrosse. I played an entire football game with a severe concussion. Every time I made contact with a player my vision would blackout for about 30 seconds. I did it because I thought nothing of it and I felt as though I had to be a man. I told no one about it. Not to say it couldn't have been the drug usage or binge drinking but my brain is a little fried. Nothing severe but what scares me is the long term effects of my irrational decisions as a youth.

If you want to combat the problem start as early as you can with education. Honestly would not mind seeing early youth sports take it easy on the contact. Their brains are fragile pieces of equipment you cannot easily fix. One bad shot as a child could fuck up their brain development, neural impulses, and emotional stability for the rest of their lives.

I just wish I was wiser about playing with injuries.

That is true. Some players come back early but some concussions o ly do last a few days.

I had one years ago and I remember for a few days it sucked. But I was fine by the end of the week. But it all depends how your body is. I've never been one who was sick very often or in any sort of pain for a long time.
