so, basically, its like the canal that runs through san antonion, just on a smaller scale, with taxi boats, shops, restaraunts, and other small attractions.

i like it, i like it alot. its a shame the skyway is there. i know its hated, and now they are crippled by it, because stuff has gone underneath and such, and obviously, it simply cant be razed and build at ground level.

I honestly like the Skyway. I know it's the unpopular opinion, but I love the views it gives people as they drive in from the Southtowns. You can see the naval museum, up Delaware Ave, drive around the Aud (or could *sniff*), and see the waterfront as you pull into the city.

The skyway also makes you feel like you're going to flip off of it on a windy day. I hate it, and I refuse to drive it. Be gone, ugly highway!

the skyway could be redone to add visual appeal, and more of a suspension bridge (or cable stay) which could free up some support and add more room for projects (or surface parking)

For me, the Skyway is a symbolic thing - I always take it when I'm driving up to the city. It lets me see the city, see my home as I return to it. I smell the cereal being made, see the retired warships and arena, and I feel home.

yeah, and theres nothing that can be done. when the skyway is replaced, im almost positive itll be with another skyway. but phil, imagine this:

it would really add to a stale skyline (in terms of new development)

I would definitely love if the city spruced up the Skyway. Given the olde-tyme aesthetic that the waterfront will be given when CanalSide is done, maybe they can olde-up the Skyway.

eh, i just did some quick reading. the skyway is likely coming down, but not for another few years. apparently, its in dire need of work, and that the cost will be over 100 million. and its also hampering waterfront development. the skyway will be replaced by a more functional, traditional roadway. sorry phil.

The skyway scares the crap out of me. One little gust of wind, and you're going for a swim in Lake Erie. Not to mention during the winter... Sometimes people get stuck on there and people have to get ropes and lead them to safety. But Phil is right...the view is pretty awesome from it.

Did somebody say Cheerios? :D

Ahhhh, the dreams.
In reality, the state nor Erie county can afford any of it. Our state dept of transportation, after dropping over 200 bridge and road construction projects from the books in WNY last year alone, have eliminated another 200 million from bridge and highway projects for next year. All the resurfacing we see happening is just gilded improvements. Dollars spent to create an illusion of reconstruction.....it covers up problems. Meanwhile, our bridges are in such sorry shape that they are dangerous. There are briges that have concrete parapet walls falling on the highways below them, bridges that the guard rails have virtually no strength, bridges being held up with rail road tie shoring, and culverts which are collapsing.
Any large on-going reconstruction projects have been funded from at least 5 years prior. Very few projects are being designed and allocated. Although the Buffalo area has got one large project which has been designed and funded...a nuclear waste storage facility for some 70 million to be located just south of Buffalo....

WNY sucks for taxes - really sucks. I lived in Bay Village Ohio. In a comparable neighborhood in the WNY area - Amherst, my property taxes almost tripled when I moved back several years ago.

Actually, look up the census reports from 1970-72 up to 2000-02. It is by far the worst exodus in modern day America as far as population shift. Also, all of those posting sources on employment, housing....etc...etc.....be advised, your sources numbers are not a direct accurate association of population numbers in the region at large.
Buffalo, NY is at the bottom of the pile when it comes to communities for a wide varity of reasons, first of which is TAXES!!!!!
The 6 county area of WNY is among the top in the nation for taxes. Sales tax, property tax, school tax, etc...etc.....also, our income is among the lowest of the population centers, especially given the STATE INCOME TAX that is forced upon the area due to NYC and its needs.
For example:
A single family home of 2000 sq. ft. in N. Tonawanda NY, (Niagara County) is taxed annually for an estimated 2117.00. The same home in Nashville, TN is taxed at 623.00 annually. And I can tell you the list goes on and on.

$2117 / year in property tax ??? lol....that's it ? that's nothing !!!!

CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP !!!

I am praying my taxes will be that cheap when i get my new house....but i highly doubt it...more likely they will be around 4k / year

I pay over 5 grand for 130,000.

My house in NC (ex has custody) 150 grand in Charlotte...nice house in a great development, almost 3000 sq feet. L shaped ranch...the taxes? 700 a year, city, county, and school.
