And they aren't actually taking on much cap hit, just salary. Ott's cap hit is 3 mil, but Pardy (if he isn't traded) will simply get sent to Rochester and his 2 mil won't count against the cap. Nobody expects Ott to score much (30 some pts though isn't bad), but he'll help a lot with puck possession (winning draws, tough defensively), and add the overall toughness and attitude that they apparently want to add to the roster. Along with Foligno I think their energy will rub off on the rest of the team, and we'll see a little (a lot?) more passion and compete level from this team because of it. There's plenty of time yet to add a bigger center that can also produce some points (someone like Dubinsky for ex).

He's a dirty asshole and we took on a lot of cap. He's a Patrick Kaleta with 40 points a year, if he's lucky. A major move would be aquiring a legit 2nd liner or a 1st liner. Steve Ott? He's not going to make MUCH of a difference. I like the trade, but it's not all we're going to do and it's certainly not "big".

Took on a lot of cap?

Roy : $4M

Ott : $2.95M
Pardy $2M

Assuming Pardy stays up (which I doubt), they take on .95M in cap. They have $11M before signing Kaleta and Ennis, They're fine.

Ott will draw a LOT of penalties. Ott will win a LOT of faceoffs. Having a disruptive 3rd line will create some opportunities for the first two.

This is not a bad move. Not at all.

I was pissed at first about this trade but adding grit like Ott is exactly what we need. Without a doubt this will make much more sense if we land a producing center.

I think our best chances to succeed are to play the season out as is and sometime during next years draft or even b4 deadline day acquire one of either Getzlaf or Perry. There both ufa after next season so it is a pretty good chance if we acquire one we can get his help to lure the other to hockey heaven.

Vanek would prolly have to go the other way along with a couple prospects and a pick or two.
