Speaking of number of referees officiating a game, when did the game grow from one official, to two, to three, and ultimately to four?

That was the only non-call I didn't get too upset about...he does have a reputation and even if he did take one on the kisser, it looked like he embellished it to me.

he may have embellished it a little but I was upset because he actually was bleeding and the high stick was very obvious.

I dunno man, getting hit in the face kind of hurts, plus if you get popped in the nose, your eyes water and you can't see shit.

The embellishing was him lying on the ice for such a long time. I understand he was waiting for the whistle (which took forever) but I'm sure that hurt like hell

Except for the fact that, you know, he still dives.

He may still embellish, but really, I think he's curtailed the diving greatly.

I can't remember the last time Roy was called for diving.

Roy may not get called for diving, but the refs may hesitate to make a call when he gets tripped up, given that he has a reputation for being a diver.

...when will this "kid" (and he's not really a kid anymore) man-up, and quit this nonsense?

It gets tiresome to see him (in most instances) floundering about, looking for a call, as the play heads the other way on an odd-man rush.

Can't he seem to get it through his dense head, that he's only harming the team?

And while I'm on this rant...Can we all chip in to get his and Connolly's skates sharpened? What's with the "ghey" trend of not putting any edge on one's skates?

'Cos they want it that way? Well, guess what girls, if you skate around with your blades dull and your laces undone, it may be what you want. It may look cool or cute. It may be a statement of your "rugged individualism"...But, apparently it ain't fucking working for you.

Dumbasses.

And the same goes for Pominville and his exploding sticks. For fucks' sake - Get a wooden one and quit fucking around and costing your team quality scoring chances.

Cool is for idiots. Your job is to win in as effective and consistent a way as is humanly possible.

Once you've won the Cup, then you can skate around with your jockstrap over your fucking helmet, and make a "fashion statement".

/rant.

Actually Ice, I'd hate to see any player give up after they won a cup.

Wouldn't you want to win the biggest trophy in sports more than just once?

Phil, I think it grew just because one ref would not be able to see everything. It probably started with two judges to make sure the goals were credited, then the line judges might have been adopted when it just got too hard to tell if it was offsides.

4 sets of eyes should be able to get it right, but any less then even more calls would get blown.

...not arguing there, by any means. But, one must reserve displaying a "winner's arrogance" until one has won.

Do Lord Stanley at least once, before you strut around like your shit don't stink, is all I'm saying.

I was pretty irritated by all the non-calls for that game. I got thinking as to how video would help anything, or how it could be better.
Lets go with the NFL product of challenges. Ok so you get a tripping call, and your coach thinks it's either BS or embellished, contacts the referees who go upstairs for a review.
What about all the non-calls? There's no way to stop the plays if someone upstairs thinks there should be a call, its a waste of time and will cause the game to last too long. Also there's no such thing as getting a penalty AFTER the fact. You don't see pass interference calls being made 3 plays after it happened.
We already have goal reviews, which in some cases I think should be reviewable when it's not allowed. Be happy we're even allowed video reviews of goals :-X

Unfortunately I don't see how video review could help whats going on in the game any better. It's more of the non-calls that piss me off than anything else, and there's no way these are going to get called.

The only fix is to get a better product of officials on the ice, and make them accountable for their actions (as Ice has already mentioned). The amount on non-calls and fuck ups with the referees in the NHL is outrageous. If it were treated like other sports, there would be very FEW officials as the rest would get their asses fired.

As fans we really can do nothing. We have no power to go tell the NHL to change their refereeing. We have no power to get referees fired. We have no control whether one penalty gets called over another. It's all the NHL's fault, and ultimately it's going to be the NHL's downfall is things don't change.

Just to add one thing to this discussion...

Is it just me or are there tons of obvious offside calls not made anymore? And I'm not just talking about Sabres games.

The offside calls (or the lack thereof) have been ridiculous...It's like they've decided that the next thing the league will do is eliminate both blue lines - Because they get in the way of more scoring.

Such poor officiating. Miserable.

All I want is a fair called game, not meaning equaling the PP's out at the end.

If one team is committing 7 penalties, call them, the other team only commits 3 call it.

PP's are a part of the game and teams should be good on the PK or more disciplined. Call the game right and hold accountability with referees. They get held to certain standars you'd see many more fair games.

No bias in reffing either, you show any bias you get a hefty fine and may never be an official again.

I do understand missing calls because of the game being so fast, that is excusable, but completely missing blatant calls we can see clearly from our seats or TV is inexcusable and those refs should be dealt with accordingly.

i'm not exactly sure.....but i think the reason they did it was so that they wouldn't miss as many calls.....not really sure if that's working too well though
