OK, OK, OK, time for a little lesson, kids.

During Bush's presidency, all the lefties shouted "He's a totalitarian who's taking away our liberty and getting us into a war we can't win! He'll kill the economy and piss off the world!" The righties shouted back "You're all just un-American pinkos who want the terrorists to win!"

So far through Obama's presidency, all the righties are shouting "He's a crazy commie dictator who is going to send death squads after our eldely loved ones and steal our hard-earned money to give to welfare leeches! Big Brother is watching and you're blind to not see it!" To this, the lefties shout back "You need to live in the 21st century, man! Don't be so closed-minded and give this socialism-lite thing a chance!"

Your lesson for the day, kids? It's all obnoxious partisan bullshit and it's going to continue until the end of time.

The minor exception to the rule is you, ETC, since I find all of your 1984-inspired comments rip-roaringly hilarious :D

Well, if you took a poll in 1492, what percentage of Europe would have thought the world was round? I'm guessing less than 36%, though of course it is a myth to say that Columbus had some revolutionary idea in believing the world was round.

By the same token, expecting the average population to believe something that is still the domain of only part of the population (scientists), is probably wishful thinking. But that does not mean that manmade global warming is untrue just because 64% of the people who responded to one poll said they didn't believe it.

Well it also doesn't help that the people trying to get the message out (Gore, the IPCC etc. etc.) have been outed as using bad data and outright lies to prove their point.

Scientists should stick to science and leave the emotional upset of drowning polar bears to the politicians and snake oil salesmen.

The fact of the matter is it's still a theory. Nothing wrong with that at all, I love scientific theories.
However asking the global population to dramatically alter their course of existence on a theory is a tough sell.

Well my 2 cents is that we as people exhale CO2, and we produce varying amounts of methane, also. This contributes to global warming, and we haven't even burned anything yet. When we burn stuff, we contribute even more. So, yes, we are contributing to climate change. This is a fact, if I'm not mistaken.
However, to say that humanity's contributions are THE driving force behind the current climate change is to do so without empirical evidence. If this planet wants to get warmer, then I believe it's going to get warmer no matter what we do to prevent it. Let's say things were getting colder. Would we then need to burn more stuff and maybe even release potent greenhouse gasses to keep things "normal"? I hope not.
For me this issue has kind of become moot, because I don't think humanity collectively is going to do anything to slow down emmisions unless there are monetary incentives to do so.

Politics and science are an even worse tandem than religion and science. The fact people are growing LESS likely over time to buy the cheese regarding man-made global warming clearly reflects this fact.

That said, people do respect intimidation, and when the Ministry of Truth tells us 2+2=5 we accept it as fact if believing otherwise gets us a first class ticket to the Ministry of Love.

Meh. Honestly I don't buy into any polls released by the 24 hour networks. My favorite was the 98% believe English should be the official spoken language of the US on CNN. Almost all of their polls reflect nothing. Most people don't really care to boot so meh.

I bet if they asked that poll during a heat wave you'd have an overwhelming majority think global warming is man made. Hand those same people scientific data that (for this example) says global warming exists/is man made, but during a cold spell and you'd have less than half buy into it. People tend to make judgement calls on serious issues based on seemingly negligible factor.

Never forget where you were and what you were doing when you found out the government wants to kill your grandmother. We'll probably invade Canada for that one.

The average american is too stupid to understand science. That's why things get dumbed down, over simplified or exaggerated.

Sometimes I think it's the other way around.

News stations dumb things down to an 8th grade level, so the average american can understand it. At least this is what my Economics/Government teacher told us. haha
