Halloween, or Samhain has roots in paganism and wicca where the purpose of the holiday is to celebrate the lives of those that have passed.

Danielle Fahey - Danielle was the neighobr of my best friend. I never actually met her, but I know her older brother and sister fairly well. She succumbed to cancer at the age of seven. From what my friend has told me, she was incredibly lively for a seven year old that was constantly bedridden.

Bre Bartelli - Bre was my ex's best friend. She lost the fight with cancer in 2006 at the age of 15. I knew her through softball, which she continued to play up until her illness took a turn for the worse 9 months before her death. Her attitude can be summed up in a quote by her, "I'll go when I'm ready."

Marsha Myers - She was my 7th grade science teacher, and nutty as can be. She was a straight up kook, which made every lesson interesting, no matter how mundane. I remember she had an unstoppable energy and was always flying around the room or back and forth while giving notes at the board. She succumbed to Cancer as well a few years ago.

Al Olsen - Probably the reason I developed such a passion for the Earth Sciences and the Environment. He was my 9th grade Earth Science teacher, and just an awesome guy. His level of organization (none) in class was perfectly suited to me. He was always interested in the dam I had built in the creek in my back yard. He passed of a heart attack in 2004.

Grandma Lail - I only met her once outside of a nursing home, and she died when I was 8 or 9. She was pretty spritely up until she couldn't care for herself any more. She died of natural causes.

Aunt Mimmie - I remember going to her apartment several times as a kid. She was always interesting, and had the most fascinating array of figurines. She lived into her 90s despite having smoked for some 50 years. She died of Natural causes.

Papa Art - Not my grandfather by relation, but both my actual grandfathers died before I knew them. He was an Army Ranger in WW II, and spent some time over in Europe. From what I've heard, he was a bit of a hell raiser as a kid. Unfortunately he smoked heavily. He died of complications due to Emphysema.

The two Grandfathers I sadly never knew.
And countless others.

In Austria people go to the graves of their relatives, friends and think of them. on nov 1st.

As many people have to travell to their home towns, villages, theres no work/school on 1st and 2nd .

the halloween stuff. trick or treat. is not that common. i dont know how the other Austrians think, but the little boom of halloween is slowing down
