I think his last name is racist towards hispanics and he shouldn't be allowed to work again until he changes it and disowns his parents.

That's it; your banned from the forums for one week!! ;)

It is rediculous, though, I agree.

That was kind of fucked up, but I'm 1/2 Peruvian so that annoyed me a bit

I don't understand why certain racial stereotypes are considered offensive. If someone says black people like watermelon, that's offensive. Really? Why? Is watermelon some sort of racist food? What if someone said black people like apples? Is that offensive?

Yeah, okay, saying black people are all in prison or italians are greasy I could see as being offensive. But seriously, watermelon? Fucking ridiculous.

Ham

Of course, watermelons, or tacos, or spaghetti are not, in and of themselves, offensive. It is the act of reducing a person to a single, simplistic stereotype that is demeaning.

In this case Griese didn't even get the stereotype right, since Juan Pablo Montoya is Colombian, not Mexican. He is essentially saying, "the only thing I know about you is that you have a Hispanic sounding name and all you Hispanics are basically the same to me."

Is it a major offense? Not to me, and probably not to most Hispanics I know. Still, Griese's comment was stupid and pointless. Montoya wasn't even on the leader list ESPN was showing, so Griese basically brought up his name in order to characterize him as a taco eating Hispanic.

There is humor that goes over well in small groups and then there is humor for a television audience of millions. That is just the reality of t.v. I didn't find Janet Jackson's nipple offensive, either, but apparently lots of other people claimed to have been shocked and CBS had to pay a half million dollars as a result.

I'm disappointed in Griese. I really am. He is a sports personality, and his job is to entertain me. That comment was boring. It wasn't even funny racism. It was bording, borderline, meh racism. At least say something ridiculously over the top that causes a huge stir and entertains the crap out of everyone.

It reminds me of when Arthur Blank made the comment about Michael Vick and Fried Chicken. It was stupid, I don't even think Fried Chicken is specific to black people, I think its specific to the south, which coincidently has a large percentage of black people.

Seriously! I thought eating taco's was a slur against lesbians.

PC attitudes have taken over this country. It's disgusting.

Oh and a random thought, but still kind of on topic...... how many of you laughed your balls off when you saw the new Taco Bell commercials for the first time?

Black Dress. Black Sheep. Black Taco?!

I spit beer all over my living room that night!

I hear people talking about political correctness as if it is something new, but the reality is that there have always been certain topics that are not discussed. The community has always enforced its mores about what is or is not acceptable.

You want serious "political correctness?"

The first birth control clinic in the U.S. was raided by the police in 1916 and the woman who founded it, Margaret Sanger, served 30 days in jail for prescribing birth control, something that it was illegal to discuss in publications throughout the 19th century.

In 1919 Eugene Debs, a labor leader and presidential candidate, was sentenced to ten years in jail for opposing World War I. He got a million votes for president in 1920 from his jail cell.

That same year a young J. Edgar Hoover, along with Attorney General of the US, led the Palmer Raids, arresting over 10,000 people for being “radicals.” It was the largest mass arrest in U.S. history.

In the 1950s ten to twelve thousand people lost their jobs and hundreds were imprisoned as part of the McCarthy Red Scare. Their crime was being politically on the left.

It wasn’t until 2003 that homosexuality was legal throughout the entire United States and before that being gay could officially earn you fines, jail time, or loss of civil rights. Unofficially it could get you killed.

What most people call “political correctness” today is nothing more than simple good manners.

You have the constitutional right to say anything you want, but that doesn’t mean your boss (in this case ABC/Disney) is required by law to give you a forum to say it.

You have every right to say what you want except things which are degrading another human or slandering others.

What he said was an implied comment of him sucking and he bashed him for it.

Thus he got in trouble for it.

But we do not make the rules, if you bash someone, you should pay the penalty if you're a TV anchor or sports caster.

Sticks and pucks may break my bones...But, words are just so much air vibrating.

A person with integrity cannot have it stripped away, by any means. A person with inner strength and confidence cannot be robbed of these things. A person of ability and independent spirit is unchanged by others' opinions of them.

It is only the weak that look to others, in an effort to assign themselves value. It is only the foolish that define themselves through the judgment of others.

This was a decision made by the weak, for the benefit of the weak.

*shrug*
