Head-shot ban can be touchy subject

"Ken Holland, of the Detroit Red Wings, is widely considered one of the most influential general managers in the National Hockey League.

He hopes to put that influence to good use at the annual general managers' meeting scheduled for the second week of November in Toronto.

His quest? To keep pushing for a new rule that bans all hits to the head from the blind side.

His motivation? To save players from the agony of the career killer known as post-concussion syndrome."

I like this man's courage. Too many fence-sitters on this potentially tragic issue.

Hmm....

I'm interested to see how the folks who think headshotting is 'part of the game' respond to this.

There's a great article by Proteau over at THN.com about Adam Foote calling for incredibly harsh discipline.

Read it here.

The use of the word "disrespect" echoes well with me.

No one says don't hit, or don't hit hard...It's about giving a fellow-athlete a fair chance to protect himself from the risk of injury. The head-shot, in Hockey, has become the equivalent of the "low blow", in boxing.

Contact is permitted; it's even welcomed - It's part of the damn game. But, only when applied discriminantly and fairly, in an effort to further the course of the game.

When one's success becomes reliant upon the purposeful, long-term elimination of a player from the sport, it ceases to be a "sportsmanlike" contest, and becomes predatory and gladiatorial in nature.

I'm tempted to compare quotes from Adam Foote with ours from the other thread, and against other posters.

That would be too easy though. Like Foote said, it's a problem that can be solved in a simple manner. There shouldn't need to be any more said.

I was thinking the same thing, 1980. It was a bit of deja vu, for sure.
