Players had a code because they were all exposed. You didn't crash the net and the goalie because the nets were hammered into the ice on posts, not flopping off with magnets. Guys were aware all the time, every shift, of their mortality and vulnerability, so they were all very careful and respectful for their own protection as well as the lives of one another.

It was unspoken, but understood. The advances in armor have done more harm than good, IMO.

Folks with airbag-equipped vehicles cause more fatal accidents than folks owning vehicles without them - They survive these accidents, only to see the poor schlep in the other (older, less-equipped vehicle) die.

A sense of invincibility = Recklessness.
