Any fight fans here? Figured I'd start a thread since there's a live event tonight and the kick off of the Ultimate Fighter too.

So what are your thoughts on Kimbo Slice for starters?

Because I have no money for $45 UFC events, I watch a helluva lot of WEC. I'm a big Jens Pulver fan.

Kimbo Slice is an idiot for keeping up with this. MMA fights have years of experience with multiple disciplines. He's studied "punching dudes in the face behind Wal-Mart".

I agree with you but...... he has been working his ass off training with a range of fighters to round himself out. That's the wild card in my mind. If he really trained as hard as they have reported and improved the other aspects of his game then he'll be a much greater threat.

Also at 8 your time there's a live event on Spike tonight.

Ooo free live UFC! I'm there!

And yea, he might have, but nothing but hype has surrounded him since he narrowly won via punching a cauliflowered ear. And I expect this is just more of the same for Kimbo Slice.

He is one bad dude but I have to agree with ya. He's way too one dimensional for the UFC and if he goes up against anyone with a good ground game I see him getting something broke or going to sleep.

After the fight tonight the new season of Ultimate Fighter debuts.....all heavy weights. Dayna White seems to realize that he's lacking skilled heavies to compete with the likes of Leznar so this should be interesting.

Speaking of Brock Lesnar, he's a goddamn beast and definitely was smart about his career choices. Made a ton of money wrasslin' and now gets to enjoy being an honest fighter.

kimbo slice may not be a prototypical MMA fighter, but the dude is fucking massive, and even more angry. theres no way he should ever lose. that combination of anger and size? might make a young mike tyson quiver. and im not so sure he lost that fight that he supposedly did.

I hate Brock Lesner. Ignorant dumbass. He shouldn't have gotten the belt in the first place (as if he should have a tital shot with a record of 2-1) He just got a lucky punch in when Coture lost his balance. If it weren't for that he'd have been done, he was already exausted at the end of the 1st.

Just because you're big and angry doesn't mean you'll be good at MMA, it's more about technique and that's what Kimbo lacked.

I've become sort of a fan of MMA. I went to the same high school Rashad Evans did, graduated the year before him. Hung out with him a bit, not a ton. Glad to see him doing well, and he's definitely sucked me into the sport.

Being he's a local boy, he definitely helped pique my interest in the sport. Way to go, Rashad.

Man did you see the gash on the dude's head at the end of the Ultimate Fighter. Fighter to doctor:

"Cause you can see the bone?"
"Affirmative."

well, when your technique is "im bigger then you, im stronger then you, and now im gonna punch you in the face 18 times" it doesnt really matter much.

Wow. no offense Squanto, but I always imagined you as an older guy (like in your 40's or 50's lol).

On the contrary MMA has been riddled with examples of big strong one dimensional fighters getting their butts handed to them by a smaller "weaker" fighter. The biggest success of the UFC in the early years was proving just that. It takes much more than muscles, a temper and hard fists to win in the ring. Case in point (and I'm only picking one of an endless list of examples) the first fight between Shamrock and Gracie in UFC 1....everyone thought this shoot fighter with no neck would crush this skinny weak looking guy from Brazil....but who was made to tap like a girl? The big one who thought "im bigger then you, im stronger then you, and now im gonna punch you in the face 18 times".

No offense but Kimbo may be a huge mean dude but if he gets taken to the ground he has virtually no defense against chokes or submissions. Time will tell though. I may be forced to eat crow but I see Kimbo losing aginst anyone in his division with skills outside of street fighting.

once kimbo is down, hes in trouble. but its tough to get him down. if he gets even a little MMA training, hes going to be scary.

GSP all the way!!!

Since Directv and vs got divorced, I no longer get WEC, but I tivo all the ufc stuff. Royce Gracie was an amazing example for all of us, on "size don't matter" - that dude was impressive!!

I remember seeing Royce Gracie knock out a much larger opponent with a couple round house, and a back kick years ago. I thought it was Emanual Yarbrough that he knocked out, but I think it was Kieth Hackney that took out Yarbrough. Anyone remember those bouts?

Gracie hands down was the most influential fighter in MMA history. When MMA started it was one dimensional fighters and tough guys but he showed them that you need to be well rounded to make it. He beat opponent after opponent and today no MMA fighter is even taken seriously unless he has some form of ground game even if it's merely defense and a good guard. All Gracie's doing. Of course Gracie wasn't the entire package either but he paved the way for modern MMA by show casing the importance of having more than just heavy hands.
