I sorta heard about it, but not actually heard about it until this thread either.

That got my attention more than his name did. Yeesh.

Actually the only thing I notice about his name is that Hasan is almost Hassan, which is one of the characters in the book The Kite Runner.

Anyway, it is impossible to fault any Muslim for which version, shall I say, of his religion that he follows. It all comes down to abrogations, and those really come down to what a person prefers to believe... Of course, this is the extremely short way of explaining it. But, I mean. Islam is just... incredible... I've read the Qu'ran twice, along with several books written from different points of view, and it's so convoluted and complicated, and I cannot blame people for assuming terrorist any more than I can think that those who assume the majority of Muslims are like their peaceful, loving Muslim friends are foolish. I don't know. Education needs to be there, but honestly, I've read so much that... I don't blame people either way.

I do, however, very much despise the tone of what was said. I do not like at all when people throw others under the bus and condemn them based on either assumptions presuming a kind of guilt or on singular actions, without ever bothering to learn the motivations behind those actions. I cannot stand when people lack the ability to step back and wait and really think. These things are never so black-and-white. I have noticed that most people have a tendency to judge a person based on his actions in one case without first being given the context of those actions within his life, and they cling to that even after context is given... I hate it. I am an extremely holistic thinker, especially when it comes to others, and seeing it happen all the time just... I wish people would wait.

I am waiting for information on the motivation behind the shooting, myself... Oftentimes I end up very much empathizing and sympathizing with those who commit these acts; usually they could have been prevented with a single kindness, and the reasons that the killers tend to leave behind are usually truthful criticisms of our society, but there is such flawed thinking between those criticisms and the actions they choose to take... They fail to take the love that would save them from that and apply it to the ones they hate, and that's the difference.

Aaaanyway. We'll see.

Although I always appreciate the thought you put into your posts & the perspective you bring, but I have to wholeheartedly disagree here. What 'other facts' are you looking for? What sort of motivation do you think would justify a mass killing?
I get being empathetic, and wanting more facts, but in this instance, how can you not see the black and whiteness of this situation? 12 lives are lost; I don't care if the guy didn't get smiled at enough or whatever, that's black and white. He pulled a trigger, and the law is incredibly clear. He is guilty; 'motive' or not.

12 lives of people fighting for our freedom ATL - killed by one of our own. I'm to close to the situation. I'll back down. I have to. I have a long road ahead of me.

Sadly Ice, this is exactly what mainstream media does. Because at some point, news reporting became more about ratings than about giving the proper information.

I think it's bullshit irresponsible reporting, and I also think it's bullshit that in a day in age where we scream equal rights, we have made middle easterners out to be the new hated minority. What is especially disturbing is if you think about all our wonderful "Christian" values, and where they come from, it's actually from the present day middle east, and Jesus Christ himself isn't some white bread good ole boy, he's a middle eastern man, who probably had darker skin, and dark hair. Alas, we come to the middle ages, where the church controls every aspect of life, and they decide JC is actually a western European looking man, with a glorious beard, and long hair.

What really makes me sick over this whole thing, is that the man's religion is portrayed as the reason for him snapping, and killing 12 people. Well anybody who knows anything about Islam knows that it is a religion based on personal sacrifice and peace. Nowhere in the Qur’an is killing ever justified, nor is it even permitted by the religion.

The word Jihad translated from Islam to English means struggle, not war. I don't know where this idea that Jihad means holy war ever came about, but it sounds like more main stream media garbage. The term Jihad suggests that a person who practices the foundations of Islam should go through struggle, or hard times, so that one can appreciate the blessings they are given.

I really hate the fact that the majority of the American public would rather fear a whole religion, than take the time to understand it, and realize their people are no different than us, they just have a different ideals when it comes to their spirituality.

13 dead now, and for those of you who believe his being a devoted moslem was completely unrelated...no comment. I don't want to lose friendships.

Would you say the same thing if the guy's name was Walter Johnson, born in Arkansas?

I don't ever know where that fear comes from, because Judaism, Islam and Christianity are all Abrahamic religions. It's the same stinkin roots!

What part of "no comment" didn't you understand? :hand:

Sorry, but I am quietly and politely removing myself from this thread...trust me, nothing good will come from my commenting here.

Off to the Thong Thread.

Courtesy of The Wall Street Journal:

"The alleged shooter is a psychiatrist, originally from Virginia, who had been recently promoted to major and transferred to Fort Hood from the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington. His professional specialties include post-traumatic stress disorder, combat stress and other emotional issues common to the troops implicated in earlier incidents of military fratricide.

Maj. Hasan was slated to serve for the first time in Afghanistan in coming weeks, military officials said. It was originally reported that he was to serve in Iraq. An official at the Pentagon added there were indications that Maj. Hasan was deeply upset about the pending assignment.

Maj. Hasan's cousin, Nader Hasan, told Fox News that his cousin was traumatized about seeing wartime service.

"We've known for the last five years that that was probably his worst nightmare," Nader Hasan said. "He would tell us how he hears horrific things...that was probably affecting him psychologically."

The cousin said Maj. Hasan had joined the military out of high school against the wishes of his parents. He added that Maj. Hasan, a Muslim, hired a military lawyer and had been trying since September to avoid deployment to Iraq and leave the Army."

...doesn't sound like any "religion" was involved. Sounds more like an extreme case of cowardice, which was dismissed or ignored and eventually resulted in a psychotic episode.

They should have just tagged him OTH and sent him packing. Hindsight.

...everyone needs to take a deep breath and step away from the keyboard, on some of these issues. The rush to judgment is abominable.

Pretty pussy ass move ETC..... make a comment like that and then conveniently decide not to participate in rebuttal?

Maybe a good thing you are 'quietly and politely' moving past this....

ETC - I'm not your friend, so I'll comment all I want. That was a bitch move. You don't make it to Major in the military w/o extensive background checks....the guy flipped his lid, and it had nothing to do with his religion.

Should I assume that because you're white that you're Roman Catholic, that you follow the ten commandments, and that you hate the armed forces because they commit murder? Look at the stretch I had to make there to have any resemblance of a logical thought pattern. You're a northern redneck.
