Detailed in a report today in the Columbus Dispatch, the Blue Jackets are hemorrhaging USD$12,000,000 a year due to their economic operating model and could leave Ohio if not fixed.

Quote:
The Columbus Blue Jackets could leave central Ohio if the team can't fix an economic model that is causing losses of $12 million a year, according to a report issued today by the Columbus Chamber. But a deal to keep the hockey team here and the Arena District alive -- the team and the district generated $30 million in taxes last year -- probably will include asking for public dollars, and soon.

"We believe there is a sense of urgency here," said Ty D. Marsh, chamber president and CEO. "We're looking for a solution or progress by the end of the year."

Marsh said the goal would be a financial package that would relieve the Blue Jackets of significant costs, potentially including $5 million a year in arena rent and $4 million in operational losses.

"The current ownership group is not in a position to continue to deal with the arena's structural (financial) problem," said Mike Priest, president of the Blue Jackets.

Maybe Bettman will buy them, too?

Without Bettman, Buffalo probably would not have an NHL team anymore also.

Oh, wow. I hope they don't move. It's such a young team, and I have been given the impression that they have a decent fanbase...

Well, when we go to Columbus for my birthday to see the Sabres play, I will report first hand how the fanbase looks.

Anyone see how many empty seats were in Atlanta for their game tonight with the Jackets? Lower bowl was fucking empty!

The Isles are only filling around 8600 seats of their own.

Shit, even the Avs set a new franchise low for attendance at 11,020 (I think).

I was looking at the attendance figures on NHL.com and was like wow?

Some teams have great attendance, some have decent, then others have terrible attendance.

I think even with their losing streak, the Canes are selling 15,000 seats a game.

Wow, the Chicago and Phoenix Game that was today had 10,000 people in Arizona to watch the team, almost double the crowd of earlier games.

November 4th, The Avs has 11,012 fo their attendance number. It was against Phoenix.

Its gotta be the economy killing people, and people just dont have the money to spend on fun activities anymore... until we get out of this recession I feel that its only going to get worse for hockey in some areas, Buffalo on the other hand I believe will be just fine.

goes to show they weren't as much of a hockeytown as people thought when they had that consecutive sellout streak. Plus having a sub par team last year didn't really help. As did the injuries to key guys like Stastny

Very true but that was only one team, he will have to buy Columbus, Florida, Dallas, Tampa, Nashville and Atlanta as all are having trouble right now.

its weird... dispite boardering michigan, ohio has minimal hockey interest. you get to the southern parts, and its hyuck hyuck, ya'll. fuckin weird the south begins so close to home.

ANYWAYS, i like the jackets, i hope they do well.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Jackets do well, either. They have a nice arena in a central-to-the-city district (apparently, their Arena District is HOT), some talent, and a great story behind their name and uniform. It's so sad Ohio has next to no hockey-interest.
