Mair still in Buffalo

It's 23 1/2 hours into Adam Mair's waiver stay, and the Sabres forward is still with the team. He is practicing right now in Amherst Pepsi Center with only 30 minutes left for a team to claim him. We'll have an update on Mair's future after practice.

If he gets sent down to Portland, we'll soon find out what this move was really all about.

A trade will be made, or we'll be promoting someone from Portland.

Or maybe both.

If Mair doesn't get picked up, his salary still counts against our cap, right?

That's right, if somehow - because of some other GM's complete idiocy next summer - MacArthur is given an RFA offer sheet for 7 mil per, we should all expect (demand) that he magically becomes a 45-45-90 player. Does this make sense?

Should we really be expecting Vanek to be something he isn't, and was never expected to be, just because a bad/wrong set of circumstances resulted in an overblown contract?

Right now I'm an above average street cop, with skills and training that make me a little more valuable than most in my dept. If for some stupid reason the city decided to pay me a Chief's salary, guess what? I would still be an above average street cop. I wouldn't have a damn clue about police administration, playing politics, and influencing tax money or grants toward the dept, nor would I care about it.

Vanek should still be giving an honest effort and doing what Ruffs wants him to do, but this logic about him producing 7 mil worth of pts is wrong. People, get over the contract already.

Thats all fine, well, and good, but I must be old fashioned. The way I was raised, you earned the pay you took from an employer. There is nothing that says TV couldn't say I'm not worth the contract I was awarded, let's renegotiate so my contract isn't as big of a burden to the team, and we can get some more talent in here - That would take some stones.

I'm not disagreeing with you one bit that Sabres management is largely to blame, I'm just saying it works both ways.

Correct. He still gets paid, but the amount doesn't apply to the cap as long as he's in the AHL, assuming they go that route.

Wyohomeboy, something about the CBA and committment/dedication to family probably would take priority over the validity or principles of dumb decisions of GMs.

Yeah, I thought he'd get scooped up. Especially at his salary.

I feel bad for him. He's good enough to be an NHL player, and he's a great dude.

The Sabres literally could not give Mair away.

I wonder what's next.........

So now what happens? Did they send Mair down to Portland or is he still with the team?

He's still with the team. Clearing waivers doesn't mean they HAVE to send him to Portland.

They could do nothing, send him to Portland, or outright release him at this point.

I'm wondering if this move was a courtesy to Mair to see if he could get picked up on a team that he would see the ice with.

He deserves atleast that much. He has been nothing short of the consumate professional. If the team did indeed do this for him, my hats off to managements handling of this situation, it shows class.

It's a mystery. I love speculating.

I think Darcy meant it when he said they were overloaded at gritty RW forward, and expect them to promote a player from Portland before their game with Rochester at HSBC on Thursday. My guess is either Cowan or Ellis, both LW, as Gerbe has been injured.
