Completely taking the contract out of it, vanek simply has not shown the passion, skill or finishing ability he has shown in the past. If he was making 3 mill a year, i'd still be saying "What the fuck has happened to vanek?"

Considering the fact that Vanek had 6 goals in his 15 games so far, he's on pace for about 32 goals in the regular season. Taking into account that he didn't really do anything this year so far and usually hits a 10 to 20 game stretch where he totally rips it up, 40 goals from him should be still possible.

What bothers me more about him than that endless "contract issue" is how a player with his abilities can just plainly look so lost and out of tune out there a lot of times.

32 For the Season? Based on what math?

I took the 2 games he missed out of the calculation - that would make it 32.

You know Vanek has looked like absolute tripe when our beloved Austrian members who were so blindly supportive of him last season and took all the criticism directed at him personally are seeing how invisible and devoid of passion he looks.

Hi mechaphil,

Simply because I don't agree with that when we're talking about last season.

Last year - Vanek carried this team ALL BY HIMSELF for the first ten to twelve games. In this stretch he scored like crazy and the rest of the team hardly contributed at all in that department. Then (and even ferret noticed this) Ruff started his "line juggling" and (again - even ferret stated this) cooled him off with that but I still think he did fine until the all-star-game. After that he fell into a real slump and when he came back after his injury he was plain useless for the rest of the season.

I also don't think we took the criticism at him personally - just when certain members started - let's call it - being really really "impolite" (you all know what I mean) it somehow got out of hand.

I really don't wanna start a Vanek discussion again. I just think last year's criticism wasn't justified to the degree it has been displayed on the boards.

This season so far is a completely different ballgame and I will be the last to defend him the way he plays this year so far.

Sixx58, here is the correct formula, you utilized half of an equation there.

Well then, If we are using assumptive math, lets have him miss 2 games every 17. That would be your true x factor number on your math. Your assuming he is going to play 80 games, not 82. I would assume he misses 2 games every 17 to get a more accurate number. You divided 80 by 15 correct?

You would have to subtract 10 games (2 every 17 games missed) You can then divide 72 by 15. There is your accurate number. 28.8 goals (or round up, 29 goals this season).

Hmm, yea, I see your point, dude. Especially your last sentence - last season he was a BEAST until Lindy started fucking with line combinations, but this season he just looks like he lost that fire inside.

It's not that simple, but it's a simple minded view of his situation.

Well, aside from coming back to his making $7 million, it is a pretty succinct view of the situation. Like someone else posted, even if he were making $3 million we'd still be all "Holy fuck, what's happened to Vanek?!"

Okay, I get your approach. I just wanted to make a point that considering how streaky this guy can be the 40 goal mark is not totally out of the question yet.

I'd expect Vanek to be at or near the 40 goal mark at the end of the year. But if he played with drive, fire, and heart every single game of the year -or, heck, 75 games of the year- then he'd get 50 every year. He's playing like chicken crap right now, and we're barely seeing the play he can give us.

IMO, it's quite simple:
Your #1 forward who makes $7 MILLION per season should be leading in TOI, be out for the entire 2 minutes of a PP, and be clutch. Vanek does none of these things.
Trade his lazy ass for picks.

Vanek is the active leader in GWG.

I don't think its his goal scoring that's really being questioned, but his passion. Vanek on the ice, while still putting up some occasional points, has not looked like he has in the past. We've seen Vanek be a powerhorse on that ice before, but I haven't seen that at all from him this season. He looks slower and uninspired. We all know he can be a guy that comes up big and fights for the puck, but we're not seeing that yet and I think that's why people are disappointed in him right now.

Well once Vanek goes on another one of his streaks, we'll all be like "HAIL THOMAS"

That's what a bunch of us are arguing, Mel, and I think you've hit it spot on. That's why guys like MacArthur are getting away with not producing - because they're still battling and the points should come.

I mean look at Jeff Carter...he and Vanek were neck and neck for most of the season in goals scored and he "only" has 7 to Thomas' 6.

I honestly don't believe it is Vanek alone. I firmly believe we need to get a fast, dangling RWer for him and Roy. I think Stafford nor Pomminville have the skill set that is needed to elevate the play of that line. I don't know who to bring in, either through trade or up from the AHL, but I would like to see a guy with some muscle, hustle and moves put on that line.
