Ruff Cites Leaders

Quote:
For years, Lindy Ruff has spoken about buying into the system, and some fans and critics dismissed the philosophy as simple jargon. At 12-4-1 and everything going well, Ruff is still citing the philosophy.

"We've got a group of guys who've bought into the way we've gotta play," Ruff said during his weekly 8 a.m. Tuesday morning appearance on The Howard Simon Show. "That leadership group has taken a hold of the team."

When asked who his leadership group is, Ruff cited the additions of Craig Rivet, Mike Grier and Steve Montador as well as the growth of home-grown products Paul Gaustad, Jason Pominville and Derek Roy, calling Roy "new and improved." He also noted Jochen Hecht's presence, and said you'll hear Henrik Tallinder's voice inside the room, which would be a far cry from the area's summer perception of the blueliner as a defender on his last legs as a Sabre.

Buffalo has won three-straight since dropping its first back-to-back games of the young season. Ruff loved his team's response.

"I felt it was a real important week for us with the type of teams we were playing," Ruff said. "We played two physical teams. We played really well for the most part. It was a two-game series I was looking forward to, and I thought our team came out hard."

The Sabres coach also enjoyed the way his team rebounded from an embarrassing home loss to Philadelphia to top the Flyers one week later in Pennsylvania.

"The grit, the special teams, how hard we came out in Philly in a back-to-back situation... I think that's the great thing about playing a team that we had just played previously and had their way with us," Ruff said. "The loss hurts, but it's how you respond, and I thought our team responded well in Philadelphia."

For the entire conversation, including Tyler Ennis standing up to Chris Pronger and the team's recent success on face-offs, head to our Audio Vault.

The parts in red I found most interesting.

The part in yellow I found to be the most disingenuous. Anne is to leadership as ETC is to diet and exercise.

Based on the fact he carries a purse :)

On a serious note, I just do not like Hecht. Not for 3.5 million reasons. Oh and his game play is mainly defensive, so being on the 3rd line seems about right, but his game play holds up talent such as Kennedy and Grier. I think Hecht would be much better in the AHL training young talent as a line 2 LWer for Portland, honestly, I do.

I've never been a huge fan of Hecht.

But I've got to hand it to him. I can't rag him on effort so far this year. He's been hustling. He just doesn't have the offensive ability that I'd like to see partnered with Kennedy.

I know Ruff likes them as a defensive line, but we could really benefit from the extra production.

Personally, I think a much more cost effective move would be adding scoring to our third line by dropping a skill player on the outside of Kennedy, like Ennis.

In reality, I think that's the move Darcy will make to improve our scoring.

Hecht was a product of having Briere and Pommers on his line. The next year he was a product of having Connolly and Pommers there. Last year you could see the true "solitary" Jochen Hecht, and this year his defensive prowess is a product of having Grier on his line.

He is only as good as his linemates, meaning he is not a standalone player you should be paying 3.5 million to.

I think Hecht is a solid player with a head scratching contract.

After Black Monday, we really had no choice it seemed with the impending free agents. I actually have his jersey only b/c I considered him at the time a Curtis Brown type of guy. Just a good solid player who doesn't put up huge numbers...oh well.

I think it was in 06-07 when hecht had this odd knack for finding and exploiting short-side holes between the goalie and the post, scoring the most impossible goals from terrible angles.

but...ain't really seen shit from him since.

That is very interesting. Some of those guys I can see, and others are surprising.

Tyler Myers - Future captain of the Buffalo Sabres, and future Norris Trophy Winner

Manning the machine gun on the Tyler Myers Bandwagon - just in case any teams have an idea of prying him away from us (3 GM's shot already)

Connolly/Roy - 2 goals in the last 47 playoff games

Nah, I take no credit for the term "Wacky German Deflection Goal." That is genius, but it is not mine.

So if you ever saw Hecht walking down the street, would you lay into him?

Are you kidding? Yeah, I'd totally kick his ass! In fact, I've slapped him around more than a few times already. What, you think I'm just a 5'7" 42 year old message board hack with a beer gut, or something?
