No, players can have hobbies, what's the big deal.

Agreed, One of our recently retired defenseman, Numinnen, had a company that makes sticks.

It makes me laugh when people complain about athletes doing extra-carriculars. It's not like the dude is motorcycling without a helmet a la big ben for the steelers. Athletes are people too.

"DOH"
That is funny, I was just talkin today to a friend about that. I remember a couple of years ago I mentioned to my buddy if it was possible that Ben could have a bigger head. Then the accident happened, the day of his first pics following the accident my buddy called me and asked if I knew Chris Kelso's number, Bens going to need a bigger helmet

The spelling in this thread is atrocious. ATROCIOUS!

Also, to correct the poster that made mention of Numminen's former (that's important to remember) stick company, Montreal Sports...he sold his controlling stake in his father's company, with his father retiring during the 2008 summer, because he wanted to focus on his last season of hockey instead of having corporate responsibilities weigh down on him during the season.

I only have admiration for his blog. The guy is doing a lot for kids, and I have absolutely no issue with that. I also admire his always honest assessments of himself. This guy ALWAYS feels he can be better, and that's humble pie right there. How many times have you came home from work, and said you weren't that good??? I'm sure most people think they worked "so hard", and want attention for it. Vanek has NEVER been like that.

Hmm March to September, I guess he can't even watch hockey when he isn't playing?

Or own a team for kids to play and possibly have a shot at the NHL.

In a year where our highest paid, supposedly most potent offensive weapon is shooting blanks, i'd think/hope/expect that he'd be a bit too focused on improving his game to be taking on such a large endeavor. Look at his freaking post...his own hockey playing is a footnote, like..."oh, i'm totally sucking, but since i'm a veteran i'm not going to worry about it". Well, flippin fantastic for him, I guess once i've been working at my job a couple more years I can just float around, hardly doing my job, and everyone will be happy about it.

dude, chill out. like others have mentioned, players have hobbies/business ventures outside of hockey. Chelios owns a bar and has his own chili brand, a couple players on Vancouver own a friggen disco bar in Sweden, Tim Horton had, well, Tim Hortons, and even Gretzky has his own restaurant. if you want to look at the Sabres, Miller has his own clothing store, plus that Catwalk for Charity that he has to play every year, Teppo had Montreal

as for his current scoring slump. thats just it, a slump. it will end and his shots will start finding the back of the net. we're 15 games into the season lets wait until...say...25 before we start crucify him. Hell, he even said that hes typically a slow starter.

Further more, he took on this venture during the summer and said that during the summer he would work with the team. its not like hes skipping town on off days to go coach a bunch of 10yr olds.

Alright, alright...good points woz, i'm chilling.
Yes, I understand its a summer thing, and that humans ARE capable of doing more than playing hockey. It's great that he's helping kids play hockey, and that he's the sort of person who gets psyched about philanthropic endeavors. Great, seriously, those are all good things.
But this was from mid november, he's thinking and posting about this primarily...then tosses in at the end how he's not doing well this year, but isnt worried about it. The post as a whole, at this point in time, is a bit worrisome to me, indicating perhaps that peripheral things are more of a focus than the sabres. At least thats how I read it, perhaps i'm being a bit pessimistic, but I dont think unrealistic.

Unless he puts up numbers year after year like other LWers in the league. Currently Vanek isn't even in the top 35 for LW scorers. I see those LWers within his pay range doing plenty at the 10 goal or more mark and 20 point and more mark right now. Also, alot of these other LWers have had alot more points per season the the Van man has.
I would think this has alot to do with who he is playing with. We know he can do much better than this.

But are blogs really suppose to be about work and your job?

If someone posts a blog they tend to write about things they like to do, are doing, and what they are planning. Never about work.

Ya know, your right, I really don't. I see the way linemates of others with his skill and position play and alot of what I see is in the system that is played.
I don't want to bad mouth Roy or Stafford, but the reality is Vanek would inherently be much better with either a playmaking center or RW that can set Van up or vice versa.
