Well it has certainly been a whirlwind of a week: the owner beginning to come to his senses and finally axing dick Jauron, a new QB is in town, there are rumors of a big coach possibly heading the helm next year, and a new attitude seems to be installed into the lack luster team of the past 7 weeks. But remember nothing is done yet. The bills have not hired that big name qb, there is no franchise QB, and the team still hasn't proven anything (do not fall for a marketing scam, ie. TO). Well sunday is the first test as the bills go to visit the jags, who are known for a stout defense. As well the bills face a another QB with a set of legs and a running back who won the job from fred taylor. And the Jags main target receiver is mike sims-walker, but do not forget about the jags free agent signing in Tory Holt.

Bills-Jaguars Preview

A controversial call by Jack Del Rio may have saved the Jacksonville Jaguars' season. Dick Jauron just couldn't get enough of his decisions to work out with the Buffalo Bills.

The Jaguars look to win three straight for the first time in nearly two years Sunday as they host a Bills team in disarray following the firing of Jauron.

At a critical point in its season last Sunday, Jacksonville (5-4) pulled out a 24-22 win over the New York Jets to move above .500 for the first time since 2007. A win against the Bills (3-6) would give the Jaguars three straight for the first time since Dec. 9-23, 2007.

Del Rio made an unconventional move late in the game, telling running back Maurice Jones-Drew to take a knee at the 1-yard line with less than 2 minutes left rather than score and give the Jets the ball with a chance to win.

The Jets had no timeouts left, so Jaguars quarterback David Garrard took a knee on the next two plays before Josh Scobee made a 21-yard field goal as time ran out.

Del Rio believes the "book" that dictates what coaches should do in certain situations is outdated.

"Books have been updated," he said. "I really don't have an answer to when it's changed and how it's changed. It has changed. There are things that you kind of learn that the so-called book percentages don't always apply.

"For us, we just want to do the best things we can for our football team to help us win games. That's really all we're after."

Jauron was highly criticized for a debatable call against the Jets on Dec. 14, 2008, calling a pass instead of running out the clock with Buffalo up 27-24 and less than 2 minutes left. J.P. Losman ended up fumbling on a sack and New York recovered and returned it 11 yards for the go-ahead score to win 31-27.

Buffalo ended up finishing its third straight 7-9 season under Jauron, and many expected the coach to be fired. Turns out that wouldn't happen until the midpoint of this season.

Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell was selected by owner Ralph Wilson to take over as interim coach following Jauron's firing Tuesday. The final straw for Wilson was a 41-17 loss at Tennessee last Sunday.

Jauron failed to get much out of the offense, even though it has big-play threats at wide receiver in Lee Evans and Terrell Owens.

Fewell has done a respectable job of keeping the defense competitive despite multiple injuries, but he faces a daunting task in trying to fix Buffalo's many problems.

"We are who we are," said Fewell, in his 12th NFL season and fourth with Buffalo as a coordinator. "We have that identity. We're going to try to give a little spark, but we are who we are."

On Wednesday, Fewell named Ryan Fitzpatrick the starting quarterback over Trent Edwards. Fitzpatrick is 1-1 in two starts and also rallied the Bills to a 16-13 overtime win over the Jets on Oct. 18, after Edwards was knocked out of the game.

Buffalo is averaging 15.5 points per game, failing to generate 300 yards in eight of nine. Evans, who had two touchdown catches versus the Titans, expressed his support for Fewell.

"The way our defense is playing with all the injuries, it's a testament to him. They've done a great job of keeping us in games," Evans said. "I think this is a great opportunity for him. ... I think he should try to stick with the things that made him the coach he is, rally the team and keep us on the same page."

The defense has been resilient under Fewell, finishing 14th in the NFL in yards allowed last season. The Bills rank 26th in that category, but they've been without as many as six regulars and have two starters on injured reserve.

Jacksonville will be without top cornerback Rashean Mathis, who injured his groin against New York.

The Jaguars struggled without Mathis in a 30-13 loss at Tennessee on Nov. 1. With Mathis nursing a broken finger on his left hand, safety Reggie Nelson was moved to cornerback and he missed several tackles and got beat for a score.

"I get a sense that Reggie Nelson is a proud guy who's working hard, wants to be better and the only issues he had were tackling," Del Rio said Wednesday. "I think he's tackled better the last two weeks and we're going to continue to grow there."

Jacksonville might also be missing linebacker Justin Durant, second on the team with 83 tackles. Durant said he suffered a "mild concussion" in the third quarter last week.

Edwards went 20 of 25 for 239 yards and a TD in Buffalo's 20-16 win at Jacksonville on Sept. 14, 2008. Evans averaged 19.3 yards on four catches.

Jones-Drew was held to 17 yards on seven carries.

Bills to Play Jags with out stroud. a huge hole will be in the middle of the defense.

Bills DT Stroud won't play vs. ex-Jags mates because of knee injury

Associated Press
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Marcus Stroud has been ruled out because of a knee injury, meaning the Buffalo Bills' NFL-worst run defense could be missing both of its starting defensive tackles in Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Kyle Williams has missed three games because of a knee injury and was listed as questionable by interim head coach Perry Fewell on Friday. Williams has practiced sparingly this weekend.

The Bills (3-6) have just two other defensive tackles on their roster, reserves Spencer Johnson and John McCargo.

The Bills' defense is allowing an NFL-worst 173 rushing yards this season, and they prepare to face the run-happy Jaguars led by Maurice Jones-Drew, who's tied for fourth in the league with 860 rushing yards and has scored seven of his 12 touchdowns in the past four games.

Stroud was hurt during a 41-17 loss at Tennessee last weekend and hasn't practiced this week. Except to refer to Stroud as day to day, Fewell wouldn't divulge the nature of the injury.

While strong safety Donte Whitner is set to return after missing three games with an ankle injury, the Bills' banged-up defense could be down another regular with rookie safety Jairus Byrd listed as questionable because of a nagging groin injury. A second-round draft pick out of Oregon, Byrd has a league-leading eight interceptions to tie the Bills' rookie single-season record. He also has a five-game interception streak.

Reserve cornerback Ashton Youboty also was ruled out after hurting his ankle last weekend.

Injured linebacker Kawika Mitchell made an appearance in the locker room Friday. Placed on season-ending injured reserve after hurting his right knee in a 6-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Oct. 11, Mitchell said he had successful surgery five weeks ago and should be ready to begin working out in March.

Well here is another team that will run right through us.

He has since he's been with them and will continue to do so.

Gameday Tipsheet - Week 11

Top 3 Individual Matchups
1. Drayton Florence vs. Mike Sims-Walker – These two players know each other very well having faced each other in practice for all of 2008. Florence is a physical corner and will need to muscle Sims-Walker off his routes to disrupt his timing and rhythm with David Garrard.

2. Aaron Schobel vs. Eugene Monroe – The veteran pass rusher faces the top flight rookie in a battle that bears watching. Monroe has had his ups and downs, but is coming on now as a blind side pass protector after nine games. Whether Schobel is 100 percent recovered from a groin injury will be evident Sunday.

3. Seth McKinney vs. John Henderson – Henderson isn’t quite the dominant defensive tackle he used to be, but he can still wreak havoc inside on a good day. McKinney will get some help with Henderson from Geoff Hangartner and their success will largely determine how effective Buffalo’s inside run game will be.

Top 2 Bills Advantages
Good advantage – Pass protection – The Bills might be eighth in the league in sacks allowed, but they might get a break this week against Jacksonville. The Jaguars are the worst pass rushing team in football with a measly eight sacks in nine games. It’s so bad that 2008 top pick Derrick Harvey has been demoted to left defensive end and draft classmate Quentin Groves is just a rotational player.

Best advantage – Pass defense – Buffalo ranks ninth in the league in pass defense and it’s not just because teams have success on the ground against the Bills. Perry Fewell’s defense ranks sixth in the league in passes defensed with 49. They also rank fifth in the NFL allowing just 5.92 yards per pass play.

Bills Number One Must
Red zone defense – The Bills haven’t been nearly as successful this season in defending their red zone, ranking 25th in the league in touchdown percentage allowed. But Jacksonville isn’t much better ranking 21st in red zone defense. If the Bills can get more red zone stops than the Jaguars they might have a chance.

Scouting Eye
Jones-Drew peaking
It’s not secret that Maurice Jones-Drew is the engine driving the Jaguars offense accounting for a third of the team’s total net yards (1,080) and 40 percent of their scoring (72 points). But Jones-Drew appears to be peaking as he has averaged 132.5 rushing yards in his last four games, eclipsing the 100-yard rushing total three times. He also has seven of his 12 touchdowns this season in the last four outings.

Don’t sleep on QB
David Garrard isn’t a quarterback mentioned with the upper echelon signal callers in the league, but he’s effective and a double threat. Jones-Drew isn’t the team’s only rushing threat. Garrard is the team’s second leading rusher and is second in the league in rushing yards by quarterbacks. He’s also perfect in short yardage situations going 8-8 on 3rd-and-1 rushing attempts.

Winning the tight ones
Jacksonville has won three of their last four games and five of their last seven, and their wins have largely been by close margins. Four of their five victories this season have been decided by seven points or less with their last three by a field goal or less. They’ve won two games in the final seconds on game-winning field goals including last week’s 24-22 win over the Jets. In games determined by three points or less, the Jaguars are 3-1 this seaon.

Down some starters
The Bills aren’t the only team in the league missing some starters at this point in the season. Jacksonville could be down two key starters on defense for Sunday’s game. Top corner Rashean Mathis is out with a groin injury and starting MLB Justin Durant is doubtful with a head injury. In addition starting SS Gerald Alexander is questionable with a shoulder injury.

Rookies tackles
Much like Buffalo, Jacksonville has some youth on their offensive line. While the Bills have their rookies at the guard spots, the Jaguars have rookies on the edges. Jacksonville’s top two draft choices last April were offensive tackles Eugene Monroe (8th overall) and Eben Britton (39th overall). Monroe has started six games on the left and Britton eight on the right as each has missed time due to illness or injury. They’ve had their ups and downs, but are holding their own as part of the league’s 10th ranked offense.

Disciplined group
The Jaguars lead the NFL in fewest penalty yards with 330 and rank second in the league in fewest penalties assessed with just 44 in nine games. They have the second-fewest holding calls (3) and are one of five teams to not have a delay of game penalty. Defensively, Jacksonville is one of four teams not to have a pass interference penalty this season.

Covering well
The Jaguars are fairly solid on special teams and are excelling in the coverage game. Jacksonville ranks 12th in kick coverage and are tops in the NFL in punt coverage. They’re allowing a miniscule 3.3 yards per punt return by their opponents. A big factor in that figure is punter and WNY native Adam Podlesh (Pittsford). Podlesh has forced opponents to take fair catches on almost half of his punts this season (9-20).

Buffalo Chips
Quote of the Week
“This team has an identity. I’m probably a little bit more fired up. I’m a little bit more emotional or a lot more emotional I would say. Whether they take on those characteristics or not I don’t know. I just know that I’m going to get this team to try and focus on one game, Jacksonville. I’m going to try to get the team to play with a purpose.”
--Interim head coach Perry Fewell on how the Bills will be different under his leadership

Stat of the Week
Ryan Fitzpatrick has a record of 4-1 in his last five starts.

Milestones in reach
Jairus Byrd needs one interception to tie for second most INTs in one season by a Bills player, two to tie a team record (10).

Lee Evans needs 170 receiving yards to move into sole possession of third place on the Bills all-time receiving yardage list.

Terrell Owens needs 93 receiving yards to pass Marvin Harrison for fourth place in NFL history.

Final note
In his last start against the Jaguars on Nov. 2, 2008, Ryan Fitzpatrick went 21-31 for 162 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a 21-19 win over Jacksonville.

Me either but at this point I've written off the season. I don't see a massive comeback out of the Bills.

Of course, Bills has a great TD reception and a friggin rookie offensive lineman fucks it up.

all i'm hoping for is that Byrd gets at least two interceptions. I'd take one, keep the trend going.

end of the first another commercial opportunity for the network that already has more commercials than game showing time. seriously 10 minutes commercials and 2 minutes of game coverage WTF.

and they still can't get the QB. garrard ran into corner and still threw the pass for positive yards. WTF.
