Back when each team did their own thing, the Rangers didn't want to run their own team boards, so they linked to a major fan created one. Eventually they bought that site and integrated it with their site a little better.
The NHL then mandated that each team had to have an integrated web site design to fit in with the NHL.com network. The Rangers sued under anti-trust grounds, since they wanted to retain full control of their website since it was so profitable.
They lost that suit, and had to convert the main website format. I believe they settled on the message boards thing, but I'd have to dig up the story on that to be sure.
Interesting, I've always wondered why things were so different with them.
